Frequently Asked Questions

Is luxury vinyl really waterproof?

The plank is. Water does not swell a vinyl core the way it swells wood. What still matters is the subfloor and the perimeter: standing water can find its way under a floating floor at the edges.

What wear layer should I choose?

For a normal home, 12 mil and up. For a busy family floor, pets or a rental, 20 mil is the safer number. Thin wear layers scuff where chairs move.

Can luxury vinyl go over existing tile?

Usually yes, if the tile is sound and flat. Wide grout joints telegraph through thin planks, so a rigid core product or a levelling compound solves that.

Does vinyl plank flooring need underlay?

Many rigid core planks come with the pad attached. Standard vinyl usually wants a thin underlay for sound, unless the manufacturer says to lay it directly.

Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring

Luxury vinyl planks and tiles that carry a wood or stone print over a waterproof core. They click together over most existing floors, which is what makes them the quickest room to finish in a renovation.

The wear layer is the number that matters. A thicker wear layer, measured in mils, is what keeps the print from scuffing under chairs and pet claws. For a family kitchen or a rental, look at the higher mil options rather than the thinnest plank.

Vinyl handles water, so it goes where engineered wood cannot: basements, laundries, bathrooms and kitchens. It also stays warmer underfoot than tile and takes the sound out of a room.
