A shower floor has one job it can't get wrong: grip underfoot on a wet, sloped surface. Small mosaics are the standard answer because the tight grout grid adds traction and the sheet can pitch smoothly toward the drain. Why small format wins on a pan

A shower floor slopes about a quarter inch per foot toward the drain. Large tiles can't bend to that, but 1x1 and 2x2 mosaics flex on their mesh backing and follow it without lippage. The extra grout lines give your feet something to hold when the floor is wet and soapy. That's why almost every tiled shower pan uses a mosaic.

Picking a surface

• Honed, tumbled, or matte is the right call underfoot. Texture beats shine on a pan.
• Save high-polish tile for the walls.
• Penny and hex hide water spots and look classic. Herringbone looks more tailored.

Seal natural stone before grouting so daily use doesn't leave marks, and match the pan to coordinating shower wall mosaics so the surround reads as one piece.
