Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should a patio paver be?

For a walkway or patio on a prepared base, 3cm natural stone or 2cm porcelain is standard. If vehicles will cross it, step up in thickness and set the pavers on a compacted base with the right bedding.

Do patio pavers need to be sealed?

Natural stone benefits from a breathable outdoor sealer, mostly to slow staining from leaves, food and oil. Porcelain does not need sealing at all.

Which paver stays coolest in the sun?

Light coloured travertine. Its density and pale tone keep it noticeably cooler than dark stone or concrete, which is why it is the default around pools in hot states.

Can I lay pavers directly on grass or soil?

Not if you want them to stay level. They need a compacted base of gravel and bedding sand, or pedestals on a roof deck. Skipping the base is the main reason patios end up uneven.

Patio Pavers

Pavers built for the ground outside: travertine, marble, limestone and 2cm porcelain, in 16x24 and 24x24 formats plus French pattern sets that mix four sizes in one repeat. Most of the range sits between $6 and $12 per square foot.

Thickness is what separates a paver from a tile. These are cut thick enough to sit on sand, gravel or pedestals and to survive freeze and thaw. The surfaces are deliberately rough: tumbled, sandblasted, brushed or textured, so they stay grippy in the rain.

Travertine is the classic patio and pool deck stone because it stays cool underfoot in full sun. Porcelain pavers cost a little more up front but never need sealing and will not stain from planters or barbecue grease.
