Zellige · Tiles
Zellige tiles four inches square under a glossy brown glaze, cut by hand in the Moroccan way. A box holds sixty pieces, coming to 6.67 square feet.

Design
Tiles zellige of this kind are cut one at a time and glazed by hand, so chips, pits, uneven edges and a colour that swings within a single box all come with the tile. A brown glaze shows that more plainly than a pale one, since the thin places read lighter and the pooled places almost black. Gloss then puts a highlight on every uneven face. None of it is a defect, and a flat uniform surface is not what this material is for. Ordering a spare box is worth it, since a replacement bought later comes out of a different firing and will not match what is already up.
Edges, thickness and colour all vary piece to piece.
6.67 square feet, enough for a small run and spares.

Where to use it
Backsplash is the rating on this tile, and the kitchen is the room given. Zellige on a kitchen wall is set with a tight joint of about a sixteenth of an inch, or nearly butted as tradition has it, with a dark or matching grout. Because thickness varies, butter the back of each piece and keep checking the face for level. Eleven boxes would be needed to cover 60 square feet.
About 1/16 inch, or nearly butted.
Uneven thickness is handled piece by piece.
Why we chose it
The glaze wipes down with ordinary tile cleaner. Exposed clay along the cut edges can be sealed if you would rather it did not take up marks.
