Double Dutch in blue

Ceramic mosaics in the Double Dutch design, glazed blue, on sheets of 12 by 12 inches at 3/8 of an inch thick. One sheet covers 0.87 square feet and six go in a box. Difference between pieces is slight.

Design

A shaped repeat

Double Dutch is a shaped piece rather than a square, so the sheet reads as a pattern in its own right before colour enters into it. Blue ceramic mosaics carry that shape well because a fired glaze pools slightly differently across a curved edge than across a flat one, which picks out the outline. The colour itself does not shift from piece to piece and will not fade where sunlight reaches it. Grout colour decides how hard the shape reads, a close tone letting the field blur together and a contrasting one drawing every outline.

Shaped pieces

The repeat is in the cut, not only the colour.

Where to use it

Commercial interior walls

One approval sits against this product, commercial interior walls, and the kitchen is the room noted with it. Ceramic kitchen tiles supplied on mesh go up as whole sheets, which is the only sensible way to set a shaped repeat by hand. Fourteen boxes would cover 60 square feet. Spread adhesive fully behind each sheet, since an empty spot cracks a piece the moment anything presses on it.

Sheets, not pieces

Mesh backing sets the whole repeat at once.

Why we chose it

  • Pattern built inThe shape carries the design without a second colour.
  • No sealingA glazed face resists staining on its own.
  • Colour that holdsFired glaze does not fade in daylight.

Care

No sealer. Any household tile cleaner suits the glaze, and the many joints in a mosaic are what will need attention over the years rather than the tile.
