Frequently Asked Questions

Is ceramic good for a kitchen backsplash?

Yes. It is glazed, so grease and sauce wipe straight off, it never needs sealing and it is the least expensive way to tile a wall well.

Ceramic or porcelain for a backsplash?

On a wall the difference barely matters, since neither takes foot traffic. Ceramic gives more glaze colours and costs less; porcelain is denser and the better pick if the same tile continues onto a floor.

Do crackled glaze tiles stain?

They can. The crackle is in the glaze surface, so pigment from turmeric or tomato can settle in it. Seal crackled tile before grouting and wipe spills promptly.

How much backsplash tile do I need?

Measure the wall length by the height from counter to cabinet, usually about 18 inches, then add ten percent. Order outlets and edge trim at the same time.

Ceramic Backsplash Tile

Glazed ceramic for the wall behind a counter, in 4x8, 4x12, 6x6 and 2x6 formats plus mosaic sheets. Glossy, matte and crackled glazes run through white, blue, black and grey, with a handful of brighter colours.

Ceramic is the practical backsplash: it is the cheapest way to cover a wall properly, the glaze wipes clean behind a range, and it never needs sealing. Only the grout does.

A crackled glaze adds depth but the fine craze lines can take on colour from strong sauces, so seal those before use. If the kitchen already has a busy counter, keep to one plain field and let the counter lead.
