Frequently Asked Questions

What colours does Essence come in?

Black, grey, white and a warm gold, all with the same cleft slate texture.

Is it slip resistant?

Slip resistant versions are made for most sizes, and the cleft texture itself gives more grip than a smooth matte tile. For a shower floor or a pool surround, choose the slip resistant surface.

Will it flake like real slate?

No. Real slate is split along its bedding planes and will shed thin layers in a busy room. This is a porcelain body with the slate face pressed into it, so the surface stays as it is.

What sizes are available?

Field tiles at 12x24 and 24x48, mosaics at 12x12, and bullnose trim at 3x12 and 3x24.

Essence Slate Look Porcelain

Slate is a stone that flakes. It is split rather than sawn, so the face has a shallow cleft texture, and over time in a busy room that surface sheds thin layers and the colour lightens where it does. Essence keeps the texture and drops the flaking: a porcelain body with a slate face pressed into it, in black, grey, white and a warm gold.

The texture is not just visual. A cleft face gives grip underfoot, which is why slate ends up in entries, mudrooms and around pools in the first place, and the slip resistant version of this series takes that further for wet floors.

Living with a dark floor

Black slate shows dust the way any dark matte floor does, which is worth knowing before it goes into a hallway. The grey and gold colourways are more forgiving and keep the same texture. If the room is dark to begin with, the white version gives the cleft face without closing the space in.
