Frequently Asked Questions

What is a semi polished finish?

A face ground until it reflects without being taken to a full mirror. It sits between honed, which stops at an even matte, and polished, which returns the room. On a printed marble it gives the surface some of the depth real stone has without the flat reflection a full polish produces.

Why semi polished on a Carrara print?

Because Carrara is a quiet stone. Its veining is fine and evenly spread rather than bold, so a full polish produces a bright empty plane with little figure for the reflection to play against. A partial polish keeps the veining as the thing being looked at while still lifting the white ground.

What does select mean here?

In stone it means sorted output: the part of a quarry's production falling within a narrower band of tone and veining. On a porcelain there is no quarry to sort, so the word is describing the character being imitated, which is the even consistent end of Carrara rather than its more variable beds.

How do the three colors differ?

The veining is much the same and the ground changes. The white is cool and bright, the beige is warm, and the gray is the quietest of the three. On a marble look that is the decision that matters, because the ground sets the temperature of the room and the veining is a constant across all three.

Is one size a limitation?

Not for a floor. 12x24 is the format most interior floors are laid in, large enough to cut the joint count against a small tile and forgiving enough that the surface underneath does not have to be perfect. What a single-size range does not give you is a mosaic for a shower pan or trim for an edge.

What semi polished actually is

A full polish takes a fired surface to a mirror. A honed one stops well before that, at an even matte. Semi polished stops in between: enough reflection to give the print depth, not enough to return the room.

On a printed marble that matters more than on a plain color. The depth people recognize in real marble is light entering a translucent surface and coming back, and a partial reflection gets closer to it than a matte face does without the flat mirror a full polish produces.

Why it suits a Carrara print in particular

Carrara is the quiet white marble: fine gray threads spread evenly rather than bold veins in a few places.

A full polish on a print that subtle produces a bright empty plane, because there is not much figure for the reflection to play against. A partial one leaves the veining as the thing being looked at while still lifting the white. Marble look porcelain covers the effect in full.

One size, three colors

12x24 throughout, in a white, a beige and a gray, all at 3/8 of an inch.

12x24 is the size most interior floors are laid in, which suits a range built around a single format: large enough to cut the joint count against a small tile, forgiving enough that the floor underneath does not have to be perfect.

Select is a grading word

The word select in a stone name means a sorted output: the part of a quarry's production that falls within a narrower band of tone and veining.

On a porcelain there is no quarry to sort, so the word is doing something different. What it signals here is the character being imitated, which is the even, consistent end of Carrara rather than the more variable beds. The tile itself repeats as any print does.

The three colors are three grounds

A white, a beige and a gray, which on a Carrara print are three different grounds carrying similar veining.

That is the useful way to read them. The vein pattern is the constant and the ground decides the temperature of the room: the white cool and bright, the beige warm, the gray the quietest of the three. Gray porcelain tile covers the cool neutral more widely.

Three eighths, and what is missing

Every piece is 3/8 of an inch, and there is no mosaic, no base and no trim in the range.

That makes it a floor and wall range rather than a system. A bathroom done in it needs the shower pan and the finished edges from somewhere else, and the thickness of whatever fills those gaps is the figure to check against this one before either is ordered.

Where it goes

A bathroom floor, a shower, a hall, a kitchen and any room where a marble look is wanted without a polished floor in it.

Porcelain tile holds the other effects, and marble tile the quarried stone this one is copying.
