Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Calacatta and Carrara marble?

Both come from the same mountains in Italy. Calacatta has a whiter ground and thicker, more dramatic veins; Carrara is grayer with fine, soft veining. Calacatta reads as a statement surface, Carrara as a quieter one.

Is Calacatta Gold actually gold?

No. The ground is white and the veins are gray with a warm gold or beige tone running through them. The gold is a cast in the veining, not a separate color.

Can I choose the exact Calacatta slab?

Yes. The batches available on each product page are shown with a photo of every slab, and the quote is made for the slabs you pick.

What makes a marble Calacatta

Calacatta is a family of white marbles from the Apuan Alps above Carrara. The ground is whiter than Carrara and the veining is heavier: thick gray, gold or colored bands that cross the slab in long sweeps rather than the fine feathered lines of a Carrara. Two slabs from the same block can look very different, which is why every batch on these pages is shown slab by slab.

The name now covers a wide group. Calacatta Gold carries warm gray veins with a gold cast. Calacatta Viola and Calacatta Breccia Violetta break the white into fragments outlined in deep purple. Calacatta Green, Calacatta Bluette and Calacatta Turquoise bring color into the veins, and Calacatta Monet and Calacatta Paonazzo sit between the two, with soft gray and lilac movement.

Polished or honed Calacatta

Most Calacatta slabs here come polished, which deepens the contrast between the white ground and the veins and gives the face a mirror shine. A large share also comes honed. A honed face is flat and matte, the veining reads softer, and the surface does not throw back light from a window or pendant. Many stones are listed in both finishes, so the choice can be made on the look alone.

3/4 inch or 1 1/4 inch

Calacatta is carried at both common thicknesses. The 3/4 inch slab, also called 2 cm, is the usual choice for vanity tops, shower walls, backsplashes and fireplace surrounds. The 1 1/4 inch slab, or 3 cm, is the one most kitchen countertops and islands are cut from, because it spans cabinets without a built up edge. The thickness is in each product title.
