What does a honed finish look like on travertine?
A honed finish is ground smooth and flat, then left without a polish, so the stone shows its color and banding with little or no shine. On travertine that gives a soft, even surface where the natural cream, tan and gray tones read clearly. The honed lines here include Tuscany Classic, Tuscany Beige, Tuscany Platinum and Tuscany Ivory in the lighter range, Tuscany Walnut in brown, Silver and Silver Vein Cut in gray, Durango Cream with its swirl of tans and creams, and Tuscany Scabas.
Which sizes are available?
Honed travertine here runs from 12x12 squares to 24x24. The 12x12 size comes in Tuscany Beige, Silver and a honed filled Tuscany Classic, and Durango Cream adds a beveled 12x12. Tuscany Classic also comes in 16x16. The 18x18 square is the widest choice, in Tuscany Classic, Tuscany Beige, Tuscany Platinum, Tuscany Walnut, Tuscany Scabas and Silver. For a longer plank, 12x24 comes in Tuscany Classic, Tuscany Platinum, Durango Cream and Silver Vein Cut, and the largest pieces are Tuscany Platinum and Tuscany Ivory in 24x24. Silver Vein Cut comes in 12x24 only, and Tuscany Walnut and Tuscany Scabas come in 18x18 alongside their pattern sets, so the same stone comes both as a plain square and as a textured set.
How thick are the tiles?
Most of the 16x16, 18x18 and 12x24 honed tiles here are 0.50 inch thick, about 1/2 inch. The 12x12 squares in Tuscany Beige, Silver and the honed filled Tuscany Classic, along with the Durango Cream 12x24 and its beveled 12x12, are thinner at about 3/8 inch. The mosaics vary by piece, from the 0.38 inch Silver 2x4 brick to the Tuscany Ivory and Tuscany Classic mosaics, which are listed at 0.75 and 1.00 inch.
Filled, unfilled and patterned pieces
Most honed travertine here is a plain honed tile, and a few pieces add a second finish. The Tuscany Classic 12x12 is honed filled, so its surface holes are closed. The pattern sets go the other way: Tuscany Scabas and Silver come as brushed pattern sets, and Tuscany Walnut as both a brushed and a chiseled pattern set, each listed as honed and unfilled with a brushed or chiseled texture over the face. Unfilled pieces keep the open pores of the stone visible as small natural voids across the surface, which gives them a more rustic character than the filled square. Durango Cream adds a beveled 12x12 with angled edges around each square.
Which colors come honed?
Beige leads the honed range, with Tuscany Classic, Tuscany Beige, Tuscany Platinum, Tuscany Ivory and Durango Cream. Tuscany Ivory is a low variation beige and cream stone, while Durango Cream moves through tans and creams. Tuscany Walnut is listed as brown, a light walnut tone with lighter variations, and Silver and Silver Vein Cut are listed as gray, with silver, gray and cream tones in the stone. Tuscany Scabas falls in the yellow color group.
Where is honed travertine listed for use?
Every honed tile on this page is listed for interior floors and interior walls, in bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms. The three mosaics, the Silver 2x4 brick, the 3/4 inch Tuscany Ivory squares and the slim Tuscany Classic rectangles, are also listed for backsplashes. None of the honed tiles here is listed for outdoor floors; for patios and pool decks, see travertine pavers. The travertine bathroom tiles collection has pieces listed for showers, and every travertine finish is in travertine tiles.
