Frequently Asked Questions

Can wall tile be used on a floor?

No. Wall tile is made thinner and is not rated to carry foot traffic, so it cracks. If you want the same look underfoot, ask us for the floor rated version of that range.

What is the easiest wall tile to keep clean behind a stove?

A glossy glazed ceramic or porcelain with tight joints. Grease wipes off the glaze, and fewer grout lines means less to scrub. Seal the grout and it stays clean for years.

How high should I tile a bathroom wall?

Full height in a shower. Elsewhere, a common stopping point is just above the vanity backsplash, or at door head height if you want the room to feel taller. There is no rule, but keep the top edge in line with something else in the room.

Do I need trim pieces for the edges?

Wherever a tiled wall ends in open space, yes. Bullnose, pencil liners and metal profiles all do the job. We stock matching moldings for most of the ranges here.

Wall Tile

Tile rated for vertical surfaces: kitchen walls, bathroom walls, feature walls and exterior cladding. Ceramic and porcelain make up most of the range, with marble and glazed terracotta for the pieces meant to be looked at.

Wall tile is thinner and lighter than floor tile, which is why the handmade glazed pieces and the 6x6 decorative squares only appear here. That also means it cannot be used on a floor, no matter how good it looks.

For a kitchen wall behind a range, a glossy glazed face wipes clean in one pass. For a bathroom, honed marble or a matte porcelain keeps glare down. If the wall is a feature, mix a plain field tile with one run of a decorative accent rather than covering everything in pattern.
