CLASSICAL OUTDOOR WATER FOUNTAIN
A traditional three tier fountain in aged gray green concrete, with two bowls edged in egg and dart moulding, a turned baluster stem, and a carved pineapple finial at the summit. Water leaves the finial, fills each bowl, and spills over the rims in thin strands.
The pineapple is not decoration for its own sake. In American colonial architecture it meant welcome, appearing on gateposts, doorways, and bedposts to signal hospitality to arriving guests. That history is still legible, which is why this piece belongs at an entrance rather than in a back garden. A pineapple facing a rear fence is saying something to nobody.
The egg and dart moulding on the bowl rims does acoustic work as well as visual. The repeating relief breaks the sheet of water into separate strands as it goes over, so the sound has texture instead of being one continuous wash.
Many small strands rather than a few falls. Because the moulded rims break the overflow into separate threads, what you hear is a fine layered sound rather than distinct drops. Three tiers means it carries a few meters, which suits an entrance or a courtyard where people pause. How loud it seems will still shift with the water level and the hard surfaces around it, which is why a fixed decibel number would tell you nothing useful about your own space.

The tiers stack on site. Concrete at this size is a two person job, so plan the position before assembly rather than after.
Set it on level solid ground. A prepared pad or paving is better than bare soil, where the weight will settle unevenly within a season and a tilted classical fountain is very obvious.
This is a symmetrical piece, so there is no wrong side. What matters is that it sits where people arrive, since that is the whole point of the pineapple.
Keep enough water in the base to cover the pump at all times. Two open bowls plus a wide base lose water to evaporation faster than an enclosed design, so check every few days in warm weather.
Clear debris from the bowl rims. Anything sitting on the moulding interrupts the strands and leaves a gap in the overflow.
Use a soft brush and water, and keep harsh liquid cleaners off the surface. In hard water areas a pale film builds along the moulded rims where the water leaves, and it is easier to remove before it sets into the relief than after. Moss on the shaded side is normal on concrete outdoors and generally improves the look.
Dry concrete handles cold. Water freezing inside it is what causes cracking. Before hard freezes, drain the base and both bowls completely, disconnect and store the pump indoors, and let the piece dry. Cover it once drained so rain does not refill the bowls through winter.

In American colonial architecture the pineapple meant welcome, and it appeared on gateposts, door surrounds, and bedposts for that reason. The symbol is still widely understood, which is why this design belongs at an entrance rather than in a back garden.
A front garden, a driveway turn, a courtyard entrance, beside a gate, anywhere guests arrive. It also suits a formal lawn with a clear sightline. It works less well tucked into a rear corner, where the reference has no audience.
Yes, which is why it is heavy and why the surface is matte rather than glossy. It will darken with rain, lighten as it dries, and take moss on the shaded side over years. It also needs draining before hard freezes.
Concrete weight makes it stable, but the upper tiers should not be hung on or climbed. Set it on level solid ground away from the main running route, and run the cord along a bed edge so it will not catch a foot. The recirculating water is not intended for drinking.
