BEAR BIRD BATH
Two black bear cubs sit inside a hollow trunk, one above the other, both facing straight out. The lower one is holding an orange honeycomb with both paws.
The upper cub is looking out and down. The lower one has the honeycomb. You can work out what is about to happen without being told, and that is what makes people stop at it.
The trunk is broad and hollowed so the cubs sit inside rather than on it, with a thick cross section basin above and a rock base below. It has real presence, more than a slim stump design carries.
It has enough presence to stand on a lawn on its own, and it also works at the front of a border or beside a path where people pass close enough to see the honeycomb. Face the cubs toward the approach. Leave two or three feet of open ground for the birds and keep a shrub within a short flight.
| Design | Hollow trunk with two seated cubs and honeycomb |
|---|---|
| Material | Concrete |
| Finish | Hand painted, weather sealed |
| Height | 23.6 in. |
| Water depth | 2 in. recommended |
| Assembly | Two piece, no tools required |
| Use | Outdoor year round |
Two pieces, no tools. Set it on level solid ground.
Face the cubs toward where people come from. The honeycomb is the detail people notice, and it only reads from the front.
Two inches is the number. Birds wade rather than swim. Shallow water also warms faster in spring.
A soft brush and plain water every couple of weeks. The honeycomb is the brightest color on the piece, so afternoon shade keeps it strongest for longest.
Drain the basin before the first hard frost and leave it empty or turned over. Check that water is not sitting in the hollow around the cubs when you drain it.

This one is broader, with two cubs seated inside a hollow trunk facing forward and a honeycomb between them. The single cub design is slimmer and shows the bear climbing the outside of the trunk.
A honeycomb, held by the lower cub. It is the detail people notice first and the reason the two figures read as a scene rather than a pair.
Less than the slim designs do. The broader build and rock base give it enough presence to stand on a lawn by itself.
The cross section basin has a wide rim to land on. Fill to two inches, keep the approach open, and have cover within a short flight.
