FROG BIRD BATH
A frog stands upright with a lily pad balanced on its head, veins radiating out from the center and two pink water lilies resting on the rim.
The name suggests a frog sitting on a pad. It is the other way round. The frog is the pedestal, standing on webbed feet with the whole basin overhead, which is a stranger and better idea.
It looks at you. The eyes sit high on the head, wide apart, and the mouth carries a slight upward line. At 21.8 inches it is at the height where a child notices it first.
Near a path, at the edge of a border, beside a pond if you have one. It reads best with green around it and it wants to be seen from the front, though the standing pose works from most angles. Twenty two inches is a safe height for birds. Leave two or three feet of open ground and keep a shrub within a short flight.

Two pieces, no tools. The pad seats onto the head.
Set it on level solid ground so the water sits even across the pad rather than running to one edge.
Two inches is the number. Birds wade rather than swim. The pad is shallow by design, so it does not take much.
A soft brush and plain water every couple of weeks keeps the green reading true and the pad veins clear. Afternoon shade holds hand painted color at its best for longer.
Drain the pad before the first hard frost and leave it empty or turned over. Sealed concrete comes through freeze and thaw well when dry.

The other way round. The frog stands upright and carries the pad on its head, so the frog is the pedestal and the pad is the basin.
Shallow, which suits birds. Fill to about two inches. A lily pad is not a deep bowl and it is not meant to be.
At 21.8 inches it sits low enough for them to look straight at the frog rather than up at a column. It is usually the piece they take visitors to see.
Among green planting, at a border edge, near a pond. It is a character piece, so it suits an informal garden rather than a clipped formal one.
