MODERN BIRD BATH
The basin is not a bowl. Its four corners lift and the sides fall away, so the surface curves in two directions at once and the water sits in the low middle.
Underneath, the column turns. Three flat faces wind from the square base up to the basin, catching light differently on each face as the sun moves.
Nothing here imitates anything. No bark, no leaves, no stone effect, no classical order. It is two geometric decisions in gray concrete, which is why it belongs with straight paving and rendered walls rather than in a border.
Modern geometry needs architecture to answer rather than planting to sit within. Square paving, a rendered wall, gravel with ornamental grasses, a deck. In a cottage border or among informal planting it will read as imported from a different garden. Twenty three inches puts the basin at a safe height, with open ground on the approach and cover within a short flight.
| Design | Saddle basin on a twisted three sided column |
|---|---|

| Finish | Gray, sealed |
| Height | 23 in. |
| Water depth | 2 in. recommended |
| Assembly | Two piece, no tools required |
| Use | Outdoor year round |
Two pieces, no tools. The basin seats onto the column.
Set it on level solid ground. On a saddle basin any tilt sends the water to one corner, which is visible immediately.
Two inches is the number. The saddle shape holds water in the middle and stays shallow at the corners, which is where birds land.
Plain concrete shows marks that a textured finish would hide. A soft cloth and water every couple of weeks keeps the faces even.
Drain the basin before the first hard frost and leave it empty or turned over. Sealed concrete comes through freeze and thaw well when dry.

A saddle. The four corners lift and the sides fall away, so it curves in two directions and the water sits in the low middle rather than spreading evenly.
With hard landscaping rather than planting. Square paving, rendered walls, gravel and grasses, a deck. It is a sculptural object and it needs a setting with straight lines in it.
The raised corners give four clear landing points and the center stays shallow. Fill to two inches, keep the approach open, and have cover within a short flight.
None. Two shapes in gray concrete, no texture and no motif. That is the design rather than an omission.
