The head is raised and turned forward rather than tucked in, which gives the piece an expression. A tortoise with its head down is scenery. One looking up at you is a character.
The shell is painted in yellow green with each segment outlined in dark brown, so the pattern reads clearly from a few feet rather than needing close inspection. The legs are scaled and the feet are cast with visible claws.

The painted segments hold their contrast best out of relentless sun. A soft brush and plain water every few weeks keeps the outlines clear.

Sealed concrete handles freeze and thaw well when dry. A low piece can end up sitting in a puddle, so check the ground under it drains.
