SLATE TABLETOP WATER FOUNTAIN
Six stacked slate ledges in 15.7 inches, on a 10.2 inch square base with a matte black basin. That is the highest tier count of any tabletop fountain here, and it is a decision about sound rather than about looks.
Each level is a separate arrival point. Four tiers at this height give you four distinct drops with audible gaps between them, which on a desk two feet away reads as a sequence of small noises. Six drops packed into the same height arrive close enough together to overlap into one continuous murmur with no gaps in it. That is the difference between a fountain you keep noticing and one that becomes background.
The slate is dark, close to charcoal, which means the background matters. Against a white wall, a bright window, or a pale shelf the layered edges and the falling water read clearly. On a dark bookshelf or in a shaded corner it flattens into a gray mass.
Continuous rather than intermittent, which is the reason for six tiers. The falls are short and arrive close enough together that they overlap into one steady murmur with no gaps. At desk distance that is what lets it fade into background rather than pulling your attention every couple of seconds. It will not be audible across a room. How loud it seems will shift with the water level and whether it stands on a hard surface, which is why a fixed decibel number would tell you nothing useful about your own room.

Fill it, plug it in, done. Set it level, since short falls out of plumb overshoot the ledge below and send water outside the basin.
Choose the background first. Dark slate needs light behind or around it. Put a coaster or mat underneath, since any tabletop fountain throws fine spray.
Keep enough water in the basin to cover the pump so it never runs dry. A small reservoir drops within days, faster indoors with heating on, so check often rather than weekly.
Use filtered or distilled water in hard water areas. White mineral film shows clearly against dark slate and settles along the ledge edges.
Wipe with a soft cloth and keep harsh liquid cleaners off the slate finish. Rinse the pump every few months, since small pumps clog sooner than large ones. Clear debris from the ledges, because on short falls one blockage disrupts the continuous sound the six tiers exist to produce.

For sound, more than anything else does. Six short falls close together overlap into a continuous murmur. Three or four at the same height leave gaps, and the gaps are what make a desk fountain intrusive. If you are buying for the sound rather than the look, this is the specification to compare.
A pale one. A white wall, a bright window, a light shelf. The slate is close to charcoal and only reads as layered structure when there is light around it. On a dark bookshelf the shape disappears.
Rock form and tier count. This one has six flat slate ledges and a warm light in the base. That one has four levels of rounded mountain rock with moss detail and cool light inside the falls. Choose this for the more continuous sound and the cleaner modern lines, and that one for a more natural look and a stronger night effect.
At 7.3 pounds it is easy to knock off a surface, so keep it back from edges and out of reach of small children and cats. Run the cord where it cannot be pulled. The recirculating water is not intended for drinking.
