Fireplace Tile
Tile and stone for the surround, the hearth and the chimney breast: marble and limestone for a classic mantel, porcelain and thin brick where the fireplace is the feature wall.
A fireplace has two zones with different rules. The firebox and anything within the clearance the appliance specifies needs non combustible material set in a heat rated mortar. Outside that zone, the surround is a normal tiling job.
Stone reads warmest here, but polished marble shows soot marks and wants wiping down. Honed stone, textured porcelain and thin brick hide the traces of a working fire much better.
