Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best tile for a floor that gets heavy traffic?

Porcelain rated for floor use takes the most abuse. It is dense, does not absorb water and never needs sealing. In natural stone, a honed or tumbled finish hides wear far better than polished, and darker stones forgive grit from shoes.

Can I use wall tile on the floor?

No. Wall tile is thinner and is not rated for foot traffic, so it cracks. Every product in this collection is rated for floors. If a tile you like is wall only, we can usually point you to a floor rated match in the same look.

How much floor tile should I order?

Measure the room in square feet, then add ten percent for cuts. For a herringbone or diagonal layout add fifteen percent. Order the whole job at once so every box comes from the same batch and the shade matches.

Do stone floor tiles need sealing?

Marble, limestone and travertine do. Use a penetrating sealer before grouting and refresh it about once a year, more often in a kitchen. Porcelain and ceramic need no sealer, only the grout does.

Floor Tile

Everything we stock that is rated for floors sits here: natural stone, porcelain, ceramic and terracotta, in sizes from small 6x6 squares up to 24x48 planks. Most of the range lands between $6 and $15 per square foot, so there is room to do a whole floor without stretching the budget.

Porcelain is the safe pick for a busy kitchen or entry. It does not need sealing, it shrugs off water, and the large 12x24 and 24x48 formats mean fewer grout lines to clean. Marble and limestone read warmer and age into a patina, but they want a penetrating sealer once a year and a pH neutral cleaner.

Check the finish before you order. Honed and matte surfaces hold grip underfoot and hide wear; polished stone looks sharper but shows scratches in a hallway. If the floor runs outside or into a wet room, filter to the textured and tumbled surfaces instead.
