Frequently Asked Questions

Is travertine a good floor for a kitchen?

Yes, in a honed filled finish. It resists heat, hides crumbs and repairs well. Seal it, wipe spills of wine and citrus quickly, and keep to a pH neutral cleaner.

What does honed and filled mean?

Travertine forms with natural holes. Filled means those pits are grouted flush at the factory, honed means the face is ground smooth and matte. Together they make the most practical floor version of the stone.

Does travertine scratch easily?

It is softer than granite or porcelain, so grit at a doorway will dull it over time. Mats at entries and felt pads under furniture solve most of it, and a honed floor can be refinished.

Can travertine floor tile run outside onto a patio?

It can, but switch to the thicker paver version outdoors and to a tumbled or brushed face for grip. The colours match closely enough to read as one continuous surface.

Travertine Floor Tile

Travertine cut for floors, in the warm beige, ivory and walnut tones the stone is known for. Sizes run 12x12, 16x24, 18x18 and 24x24, with tumbled, honed filled, brushed and split face surfaces.

The finish tells you how the stone will behave. Honed and filled gives a smooth, even floor that is easy to mop. Tumbled leaves the pits open and the edges soft, which reads rustic and grips better underfoot.

Travertine is softer than marble, so it wants a penetrating sealer and pH neutral cleaning. In return it stays cool in summer, warms up over underfloor heating and hides everyday dust better than a dark floor.
