Hand-carved Carrara White marble fireplace
This fireplace surround is hand carved from Carrara White marble and polished. It is built from five individual architectural pieces that work together: two base components, a fluted column on each side and a top crown. Every element is carved by hand, so each piece has its own veining pattern and character, and no two fireplaces are exactly alike. It measures 14 inches (W) by 67 inches (L) by 69 inches (H), a tall surround that gives a fireplace wall real presence.
Design
Fluted columns and a carved crown
The fluted columns, the proportions and the fine mouldings all reflect traditional carving. The polished surface shows Carrara's delicate gray veining on a white ground and reflects firelight, so the stone glows in the evening. A crown across the top finishes the piece and gives it a classical outline. This is carved natural stone, not a cast reproduction, and the slight variations in veining are part of that. Moderate variation from one surround to another is normal. The fluting on the columns is cut by hand, and its shadows give the white stone depth and keep the surround from looking flat. The 14 inch width lets the columns and crown stand out from the wall with real relief.

The white ground and gray veining sit well with cool palettes, warm wood tones and minimal rooms alike. The surround suits a living room, dining room or bedroom. Its polished top takes decorative pieces, or it can be left bare to let the marble lead. It can frame an electric or gas fireplace, or a wood-burning insert when installed to code. At 69 inches high it reads as an architectural feature rather than a trim. Because the stone is white, it suits a pale room as easily as a darker one, where it frames the firebox with strong contrast.

Installation

The five-piece system makes the stone easier to handle, though each part is heavy. The surround should be installed by a professional who fits it to the fireplace opening and fixes it securely to the wall. Clearances between the stone and the firebox follow the fireplace maker's instructions and local building code. The base components are set level first, then the columns and crown. Measuring the opening and confirming the fireplace type before ordering keeps the surround and the firebox planned together, and the installer checks the finished surround for level and square.

Care
Carrara White is a calcite marble with a polished surface. Like all marble it is porous, so acids can etch it and strong pigments can stain it. A surround sits in a low-contact part of the room, unlike a kitchen counter or a bathroom, and how often the stone is resealed depends on use.
