Marble · Fireplace surround
This fireplace surround is hand carved from Crema Marfil marble, a beige stone with a warm cream to ivory ground and fine, quiet veining. The carving follows the classical lines of a French villa fireplace: sculptured motifs, graceful curves and columns that rise to a carved top section. Each surround is shaped by hand, one piece at a time, so the carving and the stone itself differ a little from one surround to the next. The listed size is 12 inches (W) by 48 inches (L) by 39.5 inches (H), and the surface is polished. It is a classic piece made for a living room, where the fireplace already sets the layout of the room and the surround gives that wall its weight.

Design
The design reads from the floor up. Two base pieces carry two columns, and the columns hold a top section where most of the carving sits. The motifs are cut into the marble rather than applied, and the curves soften the outline so the surround frames the firebox without looking heavy. A light beige stone like Crema Marfil shows carved detail clearly, since shadows collect in the recesses and the raised edges stay bright. The polished finish adds a gentle glow to the cream tones and picks up firelight in the evening. Veining in this stone is fine and restrained, so the form of the piece, not a bold pattern, carries the design. Natural variation is part of the material: tone, veining and small marks shift from block to block, and no two surrounds come out identical.

Where to use it
Crema Marfil pairs well with darker elements around it: a deep wall colour, dark wood floors, iron fireplace tools or a black firebox. The contrast makes the pale stone and its carving stand out. In traditional rooms the surround fits with panelled walls, crown mouldings and period furniture. In transitional interiors it brings one classical element into an otherwise simple room and gives that room a clear centre. The top section offers a ledge for candlesticks, a mirror or a few framed pieces, though the carving needs little help. At 48 inches long and 39.5 inches high, it suits a standard living room fireplace, and the 12 inch width gives the columns and top real depth on the wall. Period homes being restored and new builds designed in a classic style are both good settings for this design.

Installation
A carved marble surround is heavy and arrives in five pieces, so it is installed by a professional who sets each piece to the fireplace opening and fixes the assembly securely to the wall. The base pieces go down first and must sit level, because the columns and top section stack on them and any error shows at the top. Clearances between the stone and the firebox follow the fireplace maker's instructions and local building code. The installer also checks how the surround meets the hearth and the finished wall surface. It is worth measuring the opening and confirming the fireplace type before ordering, so the surround and the firebox are planned together.
Why we chose it
Made to order
This surround is made to order. The standard piece is 12 inches (W) by 48 inches (L) by 39.5 inches (H), and it can be carved to a custom size when a fireplace opening calls for different proportions, which is common in period properties and in renovations where the opening was changed. To discuss a custom size, contact us with the measurements of the opening and the wall around it.
Crema Marfil is a calcite marble with a polished surface. Like all marble it is a porous stone, so acids can etch it and strong pigments can mark it. A surround sees far less contact than a kitchen counter, and whether it is sealed at installation and how often it is resealed depends on the fireplace and how the room is used.
