This fireplace surround is hand carved from light beige travertine, with a honed and filled surface. Its design is traditional: carved columns, a sculptural top mantel and subtle floral motifs set in refined proportions. Each surround is carved individually, so surface variations, natural colour gradations and the carved details differ slightly from piece to piece. It measures 52 inches (L) by 44 inches (H) by 12 inches (W), a size that suits standard fireplace openings and stays in proportion with a typical living room. The warm, light tone gives a fireplace wall a calm centre in a living room, a bedroom or a formal dining room.
Design
Columns, mantel and floral motifs
The surround is built from five carved pieces: two bases, two decorative columns and one top mantel. The columns draw on classical architecture, and the mantel carries the main carving, with subtle floral motifs worked into its face. The proportions are restrained, which lets the piece sit comfortably in a period home or a transitional interior. A honed surface is matte, so the stone shows its natural texture rather than a reflection. Travertine forms with small natural holes, and on a filled finish those holes are filled, giving a smoother face that still reads as natural stone. No two surrounds are the same: the gradations of beige and the hand of the carver show in every piece.

Installation
Five pieces, set by a professional
Professional installation is recommended for proper alignment, leveling and structural support. The installer sets the two bases level, stands the columns on them and places the top mantel, fitting the assembly to the fireplace opening and fixing it to the wall. The modular five-piece configuration makes the stone easier to handle than one large piece, though each part is still heavy. Clearances between the stone and the firebox follow the fireplace maker's instructions and local building code.

Care
Travertine is a porous calcite stone, and this surround has a honed and filled surface. Acids can etch it and strong pigments can mark it. When sealed, the stone is better protected against moisture and stains, and how often it is resealed depends on use and on how humid the room is.
