Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a bathroom wall different from any other wall?

Three things no other wall has: water arriving from above, a recess cut into it for a niche, and a floor underneath that deliberately slopes toward a drain. The last one is the one people meet without expecting it, because the bottom course of a shower wall is cut along an angle rather than straight.

Why are there so many mosaic sheets in a wall collection?

Because of the niche and the pan. A niche has a back and two returns meeting within a few inches, and a shower pan is dished toward its drain from every side. Both want small pieces on a flexible sheet, so a bathroom wall range has to carry mosaics as well as field tile in a way a kitchen range does not.

Can I use marble on a bathroom wall?

It is the largest material in this range, and a wall is the easiest place in a house to use it. A bathroom wall takes water and nothing else: no heat, no grease, no knives. Marble on a kitchen counter raises questions that marble on a shower wall does not, which is why stone leads here and not on a backsplash page.

Glossy or matte in a bathroom?

Glossy and polished lead this range, and the reason is usually light. A bathroom is often a small internal room lit by a single fitting, and a reflective wall returns that light into the space. In a bathroom with a window the calculation changes and a honed or matte wall reads calmer.

Why are there pavers in a bathroom wall collection?

Because the tag reaches further than the name. A few outdoor pieces carry a bathroom tag and appear here alongside the wall products. They are not what the collection is for, and the product type on each listing separates them quickly.

The wall has to agree with a pan that slopes

A shower pan falls toward its drain from every side, so the line where the wall meets the floor is not horizontal anywhere in the enclosure.

That is why the bottom course of a shower wall is the one that gets cut, and why the tile chosen for the wall has to be something that survives being cut along a shallow angle. A large format loses a tapering strip; a mosaic sheet loses a row of chips and nobody notices.

Mosaics outnumber field tile here

Mosaic sheets are the largest product type in this range, ahead of field tile, which is unusual for a wall collection.

It follows from the niche and the pan. A niche has a back and two returns meeting in a few inches, and a pan is dished; both want small pieces. A bathroom is the one room where the wall range has to carry a sheet as well as a tile, and most of them do.

The materials are wider than a kitchen wall

Marble leads the materials, then ceramic, travertine, glass, porcelain, slate and granite.

That is a stone-led list, which a kitchen backsplash range is not. A bathroom wall takes water and no heat, no grease and no knives, so materials that would be a difficult proposition behind a cooktop are straightforward here. It is why marble and travertine show up in quantity.

Glossy and polished lead together

Glossy and polished sit close together at the top, with honed and tumbled behind them.

Those are the same intention reached by two routes: a glaze that cooled shiny and a stone ground to a reflection. A bathroom is frequently a small internal room lit by one fitting, and a reflective wall is doing work there that it would not need to do in a kitchen with a window over the sink. The tumbled group goes the other way entirely, giving a worn matte surface for the rooms where the stone is meant to look older than the house it is in.

White and gray carry the colors

White leads by a long way, then gray and beige, with blacks, browns, blues and greens behind them.

A bathroom is usually the smallest room in a house and the one with the least natural light, which pushes it toward pale surfaces more firmly than any other room. The colored pieces here concentrate in the glazed ceramic end, where a wall can be a color without the room having to live with it underfoot as well.

Thickness runs the whole range

The figures here go from under a quarter of an inch up to a half, with 3/8 carrying the largest group.

That spread is wider than any single-material page shows, and it follows from a collection holding glass, ceramic, marble and travertine together. A glass sheet and a half inch travertine on one wall will not finish flush, and that is settled in the bed rather than at the surface.

The tag is broad

Pavers and pool copings appear in this collection, which is the tag reaching further than the name suggests.

Those are outdoor pieces that happen to carry a bathroom tag, and they are not what anybody searching for a bathroom wall is after. The product type on the listing is the quickest way to separate them.

Formats from a 2x6 to a 12x24

12x24 leads the sizes, then 12x12, 4x12, 6x6, 2x6, 24x24, 18x18, 3x12 and 3x6.

Both ends of that list are useful in a bathroom and for opposite reasons. A 12x24 covers a wall quickly with few joints; a 2x6 or a 3x6 turns the corners of a niche and follows a curve. Most bathrooms end up using something from each end.

Where the rest of the range is

Bathroom tiles covers the room including the floor, and porcelain shower tile the enclosure in a fired body.

Marble tile shower is the stone version of the same enclosure and mosaic tile the sheets across every material. For the wall outside a bathroom, where none of the three conditions above apply, the general range is the better starting point and the choice opens up considerably.
