Marble · Mosaics
This penny round mosaic puts three marbles on a single sheet: white Bianco Dolomiti, grey Bardiglio Light and black. All three are honed, so the pattern reads by colour rather than by shine. The mix stays uniform from sheet to sheet, which is unusual for natural stone and makes a large floor straightforward to plan. Sheets are mesh mounted at 11 1/4x11 3/4 inches and sold by the box, six sheets to a box. It is rated for shower floors and walls as well as interior floors, which is where a small round format earns its place.

Design
Small circles leave a lot of grout, and on a penny round that grout is part of the design: a pale joint separates each disc, while a charcoal one fuses the dark pieces into a field with white dots floating in it. The three marbles are dealt evenly across the sheet rather than clustered, so no patch of floor turns noticeably darker than the rest. Honing takes the shine off the stone and leaves the grey veining in the Bardiglio visible without glare. These marble mosaic tiles arrive mesh mounted at 11 1/4x11 3/4 inches, which is the sheet size and not the size of the discs.
Choose grout with the tile, not after it. A pale joint lifts the white discs; a dark one pushes them forward.
Colour is consistent sheet to sheet, so boxes can be laid in order without sorting.
Where to use it
Small pieces on a flexible mesh follow the fall of a shower pan, which is the reason penny rounds keep turning up in wet rooms. One sheet covers 0.88 square feet, a box holds 6 sheets for 5.29 square feet, and a 60 square foot floor with 15 percent for cuts and waste takes 14 boxes. Cut between the discs with a utility knife wherever the line allows, and switch to a wet saw where the cut crosses stone. Back butter each sheet fully, because a hollow under a mosaic shows up later as a cracked disc. Set the sheets so the joints between them match the joints inside them, or the seams will read as lines across the floor.
Six sheets per box covering 5.29 square feet. Sixty square feet with cuts and waste needs 14 boxes.
Mesh backed sheets bend into a shower pan without relief cuts through the stone.
Why we chose it
Seal the marble after installation and again every one to two years; a mosaic has far more grout to protect than a field tile. Use a pH-neutral cleaner and keep bleach and acidic products away, since both etch marble and discolour cement grout.
