Frequently Asked Questions

Is white quartzite the same as quartz?

No. Quartzite is a natural stone cut from a quarry. Quartz countertops are engineered from crushed quartz and resin. Both are hard, but quartzite has natural, one of a kind patterns.

Does white quartzite etch like marble?

True quartzite is mostly quartz and does not etch from acids the way marble does. Some stones sold as soft quartzite contain calcite, so check the material on each product.

Which white quartzite looks most like Calacatta?

Calacatta Giotto, Calacatta Quartzite and Calacatta Lux have a white ground with gray veins, the closest look to a Calacatta marble.

A white stone that is harder than marble

White quartzite is the stone people turn to when they want the look of a white marble on a kitchen countertop. Quartzite is sandstone that has been fused under heat and pressure, so it is mostly quartz and far harder than the calcite in marble. It resists scratches and does not etch from lemon or wine the way marble does.

The white quartzites here

Calacatta Giotto, Calacatta Quartzite and Calacatta Lux carry gray veining on a white ground, the closest match to a Calacatta marble. Monte Blanc and White Mustang are soft white with gray and beige layers. The Cristallo stones, Cristallo Frost, Cristallo Iluminato and Cristallo Rosa among them, are partly translucent with a glassy, crystalline face. Gabana, Polaris, Pietra Di Luna and White Macaubas each bring their own layered pattern.

Finish and thickness

Most white quartzite slabs here are polished, which brings out the crystal in the stone. A group is honed for a matte look, and a few are leathered or textured. Almost all are 1 1/4 inch, the countertop thickness, which suits islands, perimeter counters and waterfall ends.
