A white marble pedestal, carved in one piece
This pedestal sink is hand-carved from white marble quarried in Turkey, with the basin and the column shaped as one free-standing piece. It measures 16 inches wide, 16 inches long and 36 inches tall, so it stands at a comfortable washing height on its own, without a vanity or a cabinet. The stone has a soft white base with gray veining, and because the pattern comes from the block, each sink has its own distinct markings. Turkish stone workshops carve every pedestal by hand, using techniques that have been passed down for generations, so no two pieces are identical in veining, colour or texture.
Design
A honed bowl on a carved column
The basin is honed, which leaves the marble smooth and silky to the touch but matte, without a glossy reflection. The exterior has an organic, combed texture carved into the stone, which adds depth and catches light along the column. The two surfaces together give the sink a modern, sculptural look: smooth where the hands go, textured where the eye goes. The basin edges are curved, so water runs down to the drain rather than pooling, and there are no sharp corners on the rim. Moderate variation in tone and veining between sinks is normal for this stone, and the honed surface develops a soft patina with use rather than looking worn.

Where to use it
Room to breathe in small baths
A 16 by 16 inch footprint takes very little floor, which is a real advantage in powder rooms and guest baths. With no vanity cabinet, the floor around the base stays open, and the room feels larger and is easier to move around in. The neutral white marble works in contemporary, traditional, transitional and modern rooms, and it does not ask the rest of the room to match it. It sits well against plain plaster, against dark tile where the white stands out, or in a light room where the texture carries the interest. The standard 1.5 inch drain hole connects to standard drain fittings.

Installation
A strong floor and planned plumbing
A stand-alone marble pedestal is heavy, and all of that weight rests on a small footprint, so the floor must be level and strong enough to carry it. Check the subfloor before tiling, and make sure the finished floor is flat where the base will stand. The plumbing can come from the wall behind the sink or up through the floor beneath the column; decide which before the floor and wall are finished, so the drain and supply lines arrive in the right place. A wall-mounted faucet or a faucet suited to a pedestal basin can be used, and its position should be planned at the same time. A professional installer is recommended.

Care
This is a calcite marble, so it is a porous stone, and acids can etch the honed surface. In a bathroom, most toothpaste, hand soap and toiletries are close to pH-neutral and are far less of a risk than kitchen acids. Sealing protects the stone, and how often it is resealed depends on use, often once a year.
