Travertine · Above-Counter sink

A 48 inch trough of light travertine

This long rectangular vessel sink is carved by hand from Troia Light travertine quarried in Turkey, a stone valued in building for centuries. It measures 16 inches wide, 48 inches long and 4 inches high, a generous trough that sits on top of the counter. Each sink is cut from its own block, and the soft colour shifts and natural character of the travertine mean that no two are alike, even when they come from the same block.

Design

Honed inside, hand split outside

The sink has two finishes. The basin is honed: smooth, matte and pleasant to the touch, with an even surface that is simple to keep clean. The outside is hand split, a rough face that keeps the broken texture of the stone and the marks of the work. The contrast gives the sink depth, with light catching the split face while the honed basin stays calm. The colour is a warm, light beige with moderate variation from one sink to the next. Some pieces are paler and more even, others show more banding and tone. These variations are a mark of natural stone, not flaws, and the walls are 2 to 3 cm of solid travertine.

Where to use it

A long basin on the vanity

At 48 inches long, the trough gives far more usable basin than a round vessel while staying low at 4 inches high, so it reads as a calm horizontal line across the vanity. It works on a long single vanity, and the length leaves room for two people to wash side by side. The neutral beige settles easily into minimalist, spa-style, transitional and rustic bathrooms, next to metal accents in a modern room or natural wood in a warmer one. The 4 cm drain opening works with standard drain fittings.

Installation

A long, level counter

This is an above-counter sink, and a 48 inch length of solid stone is heavy. The counter must be flat and level along its full length, with no dip in the middle, and strong enough to carry the stone. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the sink is set in silicone. The faucet has to reach over the rim to the basin: a deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted faucet. On a sink this long, decide where the drain sits and place the faucet to match before the counter is cut.

Why we chose it

  • Lasts and agesStone does not dent or rust, and it develops a patina that deepens its character over the years.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order, and it ships within 3 to 4 weeks. If 48 inches is too long for the vanity, or a different finish suits the room better, the trough can be made in a custom size or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the counter.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, and the rough split face is more open than the honed basin. Acids such as vinegar or lemon can etch the surface, so the sink is sealed and periodically resealed. How often depends on use, typically once or twice a year.
