This rectangular shower base is hand carved from first quality Cream Royal marble, quarried in Turkey. It is a long, narrow piece, 48 inches long, 16 inches wide and 4 inches high, with stone 2 to 3 cm thick and a honed finish. Each base is carved individually, so the color variation and texture of every piece are its own, and no two showers built with it will look exactly the same. Cream marble brings warmth into a shower, a soft and earthy tone that sits between white and beige and makes a wet room feel calmer and more inviting.

Design

Warm cream, honed matte

Cream Royal is a warm cream marble with organic color variation and fine natural veining. The honed finish gives it a matte, understated surface: no gloss, no glare, just the color and texture of the stone. That finish suits the quiet, spa like bathrooms many designers are building now, where natural stones that feel inviting and earthy take the place of colder, harder materials. The base is carved from a single piece of marble and finished by hand, so it reads as one solid slab across the floor of the shower. Hand carving also means each base differs slightly from the next. The natural color variations and finish characteristics are marks of the stone and of the work, not defects, and moderate variation between pieces is normal for this marble. Cream marble pairs easily with white or beige wall tile, satin brass or nickel fittings and light wood, and it gives a small bathroom a warmer feel than a stark white floor.

For long, narrow showers

At 48 inches long and only 16 inches wide, this base suits long, narrow layouts: a shower along a wall, a strip of stone floor inside a larger walk in shower, or an alcove that is deep but not wide. Its 4 inch height gives it a clear presence as a raised stone platform, and the 2 to 3 cm thick marble gives it a substantial, solid feel underfoot. Natural stone stays cool to the touch and develops character with daily use, and a well sealed marble base stands up to the moisture of a shower. The base has an 8.5 cm diameter drain hole that takes standard drain fixtures, which are sold separately. The narrow width also makes the base easy to combine with a fixed glass panel along its long side.

Installation

Professional setting, sealed joints

Professional installation is recommended. The base is set on a level mortar bed over a proper shower membrane, so water drains cleanly and the stone is fully supported along its length. Before setting, the plumber places the drain to line up with the 8.5 cm drain hole, using a drain fixture bought separately. Walls and the shower enclosure are then finished around the base, and the joints between stone and wall are sealed. The base ships in a protective wooden crate so the marble arrives in good condition.

Care

Cream Royal is a calcite marble with a honed surface. Marble is a relatively soft stone and a porous one: It can absorb water and other liquids, it can stain and scratch, and acids or ammonia can damage it. It should be sealed on a regular basis to protect it against moisture, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the shower is used.
