Onyx · Sink

Honey onyx, split by hand

This vessel sink is hand-carved from a single piece of honey onyx, a translucent stone in warm yellow and amber tones. It measures about 19 inches wide, 19 inches long and 5 inches high, and because the outside is split by hand, the exact outline of each bowl is irregular and a little different from the next. The color bands and striations in onyx form naturally and cannot be repeated, so no two sinks are alike. What sets onyx apart from most stones is the way it handles light. Held near a lamp or lit from behind, honey onyx glows from within, and that amber glow grows much stronger when the bowl is backlit in the evening.

Design

Polished inside, split outside

Two finishes meet on this bowl. The interior is polished smooth, so water runs over a glassy surface that shows the depth and banding of the onyx. The exterior is hand split: a rough, faceted face left the way the stone breaks rather than cut flat, which gives the bowl a rugged outline and a lot of texture under the hand. Because the outside is shaped by splitting rather than by machine, the rim, the wall thickness and the outer profile vary slightly from piece to piece, which is why the size is listed as irregular. The striations run in bands of honey, cream and deeper amber, and the way they line up differs on every sink.

Where to use it

A lit focal point on the vanity

Honey onyx is a relatively soft stone, so it is best suited to a primary bathroom or a powder room where the sink is meant to be looked at, rather than a busy kitchen or a family bath that takes hard daily use. As a vessel, the bowl sits on top of the counter, which puts the whole split exterior and its translucent edges on display. That raised position also creates clear separation between the basin, the counter, the mirror and the faucet. In older bathrooms with a low vanity, a vessel bowl also raises the working height of the basin without replacing the cabinet. Lighting deserves a little planning: a light source near or behind the bowl brings out the glow of the stone after dark. The bowl sits well on a stone, tile or solid wood top.

About 19" W × 19" L × 5" H, irregular by design because the outside is split by hand.

Installation

Setting a vessel bowl

Because the bowl sits on top, installation is straightforward. The counter needs one hole for the drain, cut to line up with the drain opening in the sink. The surface must be flat and level so the bowl rests evenly, and the sink is set over the hole with a mounting ring and a bead of silicone. A vessel pop-up drain then finishes the connection to the trap. The faucet has to clear the rim, so plan either a tall vessel faucet on the counter or a wall-mounted faucet set high enough to reach over the 5 inch walls. That choice is best made before the counter is drilled, so the supply lines are run to match.

Why we chose it

  • One piece of onyxThe bowl is carved from a single piece of stone, with no joints or seams.
  • Light through the stoneTranslucent honey onyx glows when lit from behind, which very few sink materials can do.
  • Made to orderEach sink is made to order, and custom sizes and finishes are available on request.

Made to order

Two schedules, or a custom bowl

Each onyx bowl is made to order on one of two production schedules. The 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. Both are the same 19 by 19 inch bowl with a polished interior and a hand split exterior. If a different size or finish would suit the vanity better, one can be made to order: contact us with the dimensions of the counter.

Care

Honey onyx is a porous, relatively soft calcite stone, and a light onyx like this one marks more easily than darker stone. Acids can etch the polished interior and strong pigments can stain it, which is why the bowl is sealed at installation. How often it is resealed after that depends on how much the sink is used.
