Onyx · Vessel sink

A honey onyx vessel, carved by hand

This round vessel sink is hand carved from honey onyx quarried in Turkey, a stone chosen for its luminous golden and amber color. Each sink is shaped individually from a raw block of onyx and finished with a polish, so it arrives with its own veining and warm tones that no other piece shares. The bowl measures 16.5 inches in diameter, with heights of 7 inches (H1) and 5 inches (H2). It is a handmade fixture, made by craftsmen rather than a production line, and it sits on top of the counter as the centerpiece of the vanity.

Design

Amber light in a polished bowl

Onyx is translucent, so light moves into the stone and brings out its depth. On a polished surface that effect is strongest: the bowl catches light at the rim, and the banding in the honey color shifts from pale gold to deeper amber as the angle changes. The curved, rounded profile adds sculptural interest to the vanity without fussy detail, and the bowl-shaped interior is smooth to the touch. Every detail, from the way the color runs through the stone to the curve of the rim, comes from hand work rather than a mold. Moderate color variation between pieces is normal, so the pattern and tone of each sink are unique.

Where to use it

A warm centerpiece for the bath

Onyx is traditionally used in bathrooms, for vanity tops, shower walls and tub surrounds, where its translucency gives the room a warm glow. This vessel brings the same effect to a single fixture. The warm honey tone works with both warm and cool palettes: It pairs well with chrome or nickel faucets, sits easily in a spa-like bathroom and suits a transitional scheme. The 16.5 inch diameter gives a generous bowl on a standard vanity, and a 4 cm drain hole takes a standard vessel drain. The 2 to 3 cm wall keeps the piece solid.

Installation

Setting a vessel sink

This is a vessel sink, made to sit on top of the counter. The countertop needs to be flat, level and strong enough to carry solid stone, and a drain hole is cut through it to line up with the bowl. The sink is set in a bead of silicone so it stays in place. Because the rim stands above the counter, a tall vessel faucet or a wall-mounted faucet is the usual pairing, and it is best chosen before the counter is drilled. A professional installer can confirm the faucet reach and drain position.

Why we chose it

  • Luminous stoneHoney onyx glows where light passes through it, a quality few stones share.
  • One of a kindCarved by hand from a raw block, so every sink has its own pattern.
  • Made to orderEach sink is made to order, with custom sizes available.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on two schedules. The 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, and the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. If a different diameter, height or finish would suit the vanity better, a custom piece can be made. To start, contact us with the measurements of the counter.

Care

Onyx is a relatively soft and porous calcite stone, so it can scratch, and acidic substances such as vinegar or lemon juice can etch the polish. The sink is protected with a stone sealer, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the surface is used and on the color of the stone.
