Travertine · Vessel sink

A 14 inch round bowl in beige travertine

This round vessel sink is hand sculpted from beige travertine quarried in Turkey. It measures 14 inches in diameter and 7 inches high, a compact bowl that brings a sculptural piece to an ordinary vanity without crowding it. Each sink is carved individually, so the light beige tones, veining and texture differ from one piece to the next and no two are the same. The surface is honed and filled, giving the stone a soft matte look.

Design

A honed round with soft edges

Round vessel sinks are popular for a reason: the circular shape and soft edges soften the lines of a bathroom, and the organic outline of travertine sits comfortably next to both straight cabinetry and curved fixtures. On this bowl the natural pits of the stone are filled, which reduces the open pores where dirt would collect, and the face is honed to a muted, low-sheen finish. A honed surface hides fingerprints and water spots better than a glossy one, and when water runs over it, the stone darkens and its color comes forward, so the sink never looks flat in use. Moderate color and finish variation between pieces is normal, and the pattern of each bowl is its own.

Where to use it

A compact bowl for many styles

The warm light beige suits a transitional bathroom and works equally well in contemporary and traditional rooms, so the sink can fit the existing style of a bathroom instead of forcing a new one. At 14 inches across, the bowl suits a powder room, a guest bath or a narrow vanity, and it leaves counter space free around it. Because a vessel sink sits on top of the counter, nothing is recessed into the cabinet, which keeps the storage underneath intact. That also makes it a good choice for an existing vanity with a solid, level top. Travertine has good natural resistance to heat and scratches for everyday use. The 4 cm drain hole fits standard bathroom drain fittings.

Installation

Check the counter first

The bowl sits on top of the counter, so no undermount cutout or complex fabrication is needed. The counter must be flat, level and strong, because solid stone is heavy for its size. A single drain hole is cut to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the sink is set in silicone. Because the rim stands 7 inches above the counter, the faucet must reach over it: a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout. Choose the faucet before the counter is drilled.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. Both are the same 14 inch bowl in a honed and filled finish. The bowl can also be made in a custom size or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the vanity.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acidic cleaners and vinegar-based products can etch its surface. The filling reduces porosity, and periodic resealing keeps the stone water resistant; how often depends on use, typically every one to two years.
