Travertine · Vessel sink

A 16 inch light travertine bowl

This round vessel sink is carved by hand from light beige travertine quarried in Turkey. The bowl is 16 inches in diameter and 6 inches high, and it sits on top of the counter, where it works as both the basin and the main feature of the vanity. Each sink is carved from a single block of stone, and each block has its own traits: colour variation, faint veining, small natural pits and flecks of minerals. That is why no two of these bowls are alike.

Design

Matte, filled and rounded

The finish is honed and filled. Honing gives a smooth matte surface instead of a gloss, and it wears well with daily use. Filling closes the natural voids of the travertine, which brings out the character of the stone while leaving fewer open pores for water and soap to settle into. The bowl has curved edges with no corners to trap dirt, so the shape is easy to keep clean. Its silhouette is simple and deep, with natural movement in the stone giving it interest. Moderate colour variation between sinks is normal: some bowls are paler, others carry warmer bands of beige.

Where to use it

From powder room to primary bath

At 16 inches across, the bowl suits a powder room vanity as well as a primary bath. Because it sits on the counter rather than in it, the cabinet below keeps its full storage, which counts in a smaller bathroom. Light travertine works with contemporary, minimalist and traditional rooms, and its pale, warm tone sits easily beside many counter materials, cabinet finishes and fittings, from chrome to matte black. The 4 cm drain opening takes standard drain fittings, and the bowl pairs with a tall vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout.

Installation

No cutout, just a drain hole

As a vessel sink, the bowl needs no recessed cutout and little of the renovation work that a sunken basin calls for. The counter must be flat, level and strong enough for solid stone, which is heavy. A drain hole is cut to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in silicone. The rim stands 6 inches above the counter, so the faucet must reach over it: choose a tall vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout before the counter is drilled.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. Both are the same 16 inch honed and filled bowl. It can also be made in a custom size, shape or finish to fit the dimensions of the bathroom. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the vanity.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acids and harsh household cleaners can etch or discolour the honed surface, and mineral deposits from water can build up on it. Without regular sealing the stone absorbs water, soap and stains; how often it is resealed depends on use, typically once or twice a year.
