Toros Black Polished Marble Above Counter Vessel Bathroom Sink

Marble · Above-Countertop sink
This round vessel sink is carved by hand from a single block of Toros Black marble quarried in Turkey. It measures 16 inches in diameter and 6 inches high, and it sits on top of the counter, so the whole outside of the bowl stays in view. The polished finish deepens the black of the stone and brings out the fine lines that run through it. Because every bowl is carved individually, the pattern of those lines, the depth of the black and the small natural marks in the stone differ from one sink to the next. Turkish marble has been quarried and carved for building for centuries, and this bowl follows that tradition in a simple, modern form sized for a home bathroom.

Design
The sink is polished inside and out. On black marble that finish has a strong effect: the surface reflects the light above the vanity, and the stone reads darker and deeper than it would with a matte face. The rim is rounded and the bowl curves down to the drain without corners, so there are no tight angles where water can sit or residue can build up. On a vessel sink every edge is exposed, which is why the shape and the wall matter as much as the stone itself; this bowl is carved with walls 2 to 3 cm thick, enough to keep the rim sturdy in daily use. Moderate color variation between sinks is normal for this marble. Some pieces carry more veining than others, and the black can lean slightly warmer or cooler, which is part of buying a carved natural stone.

Where to use it
At 16 inches across, the bowl is compact enough for a narrow powder room vanity and still roomy for daily use in a primary bath. Round vessel sinks commonly run from 16 to 20 inches in diameter, so this one sits at the compact end of that range and leaves more of the counter free on either side for soap, a tray or a small plant. The deep black works as an anchor in a contemporary or minimalist bathroom, set against light walls, pale wood or white stone, and it can give a traditional room a single point of strong contrast. Brass, black and chrome fittings all sit well beside it. The 4 cm drain hole takes a standard vessel drain, and the bowl pairs with a tall deck-mounted faucet or a wall-mounted spout. In a guest bath it tends to be the first thing people notice.

Installation
Solid marble is far heavier than it looks, so the vanity and countertop under this bowl must be flat, level and strong enough to carry it; a lightweight vanity can sag under a stone basin. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in a bead of silicone. Because the sink stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over the rim, either a tall vessel faucet on the deck or a wall-mounted spout, and it is worth choosing it before the counter is cut. Any cutting in stone near the sink should be done with diamond-tipped tools. A professional installer is recommended, and the weight alone makes it a two-person job.

Why we chose it

Made to order
This sink is made to order on one of two schedules. The 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, and the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice; both are the same 16 by 6 inch polished bowl. It can also be carved in a different size or finish when the standard bowl does not suit the vanity. To start a custom order, contact us with the counter measurements and the faucet planned for it.
Toros Black is a calcite marble, and like all marble it is porous, so acids such as citrus or vinegar can etch the polished surface and dull its shine. Sealing slows absorption, and how often the bowl is resealed depends on how much the bathroom is used, typically every one to two years.
