Noce Brown travertine square shower base
This square shower base is hand carved from Noce Brown travertine, quarried in Turkey. It measures 36 by 36 inches and stands 2 inches high, with stone 2 to 3 cm thick. Travertine has been used in bathhouses since Roman times, and here it forms the whole floor of the shower in one solid piece. Each base is crafted individually, so the color and surface character of every piece are its own, with the warm brown tones that give Noce its name.
Design
Warm brown, honed and filled
Noce is a warm brown travertine with natural variation in tone across the stone. The surface is honed and filled: the natural holes of the travertine are filled, and the face is then honed to a smooth, matte finish. The result is an even, quiet surface that shows the color of the stone without gloss and feels natural under bare feet. Because the base is one piece of stone rather than a field of small tiles, there are no grout lines across the floor of the shower, which gives a cleaner look and less to keep up. Every base is hand carved, so minor color and finish variation between units is part of natural travertine, and moderate variation from piece to piece should be expected. The brown tone sits well with cream, white or beige walls, with warm wood vanities and with brass or bronze fittings, and it brings a spa feel to a shower without making the room dark.

Where to use it
A compact square footprint
The 36 by 36 inch square suits guest bathrooms, secondary baths, corner showers and renovations where floor space is tight. The compact footprint keeps the plumbing simple, and the solid stone gives a durable base for daily use. At 2 inches high, with stone 2 to 3 cm thick, it works with standard shower enclosures and drain systems. The base has an 8.5 cm center drain opening; the drain itself is not included. Travertine handles the warm, damp conditions of a shower well when it is sealed and kept dry between uses. For a larger bathroom, the same base can sit inside a walk in shower with a glass screen, where its warm tone becomes part of the room.

Installation
Set on a level mortar bed
The base is set on a level mortar bed by a professional installer, over a properly installed shower membrane. The plumbing rough in should place the drain under the 8.5 cm center opening before the base goes in, and the drain fitting is bought separately. The walls and the enclosure are then finished around the base, with the joints between the stone and the walls sealed. The base ships in a reinforced wooden crate designed to protect natural stone during delivery, and it arrives ready for professional installation.

Care
Noce Brown is a travertine, a porous calcite stone, with a honed and filled surface. Acids, such as those in vinegar or lemon based products, can etch the calcium carbonate. The base needs sealing to resist water and soap, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the shower is used.
