Marble · Above-Counter sink

Black marble, cut into an octagon

This vessel sink is carved by hand from black marble quarried in Turkey, and its outline is an octagon: eight flat faces around the outside instead of a smooth round wall. It measures 16 inches across and 5 inches high and sits on top of the counter. The proportions are generous enough to anchor a vanity and still work with standard bathroom layouts. Each sink comes from its own piece of stone, so the veining, the subtle shifts in colour and the depth of the black are never repeated from one bowl to the next.

Design

Eight polished faces

The octagon gives the bowl a clear geometry. Each flat face catches light at its own angle, so the sink looks a little different from every side and through the course of the day. The polished finish covers the inside and the outside. On black marble it produces a deep, glossy surface that brings out fine veining and colour variation and shows a different depth depending on where it is seen from. The walls are carved 2 to 3 cm thick. The inside of the bowl is smooth and the edges are curved, so water does not stand in hard corners and the basin stays simple to clean. Moderate color variation between sinks is normal for this stone.

Where to use it

A geometric bowl for the counter

At 16 inches across and 5 inches high, the bowl is a comfortable size for a single vanity and low enough to keep the rim within easy reach. The black stone reads strongly against white or pale counters, light wood and plaster walls, and it suits a dark, dramatic powder room just as well. The facets add a crisp, architectural note to a bathroom built from straight lines, and the stone is suitable for kitchen use as well, at a bar or a small prep counter. The 4 cm drain hole fits typical drain fittings.

Installation

Plan the counter and faucet

Above-counter vessel sinks need some planning before the counter is cut. The counter must be flat, level and strong enough to carry solid stone. A hole is cut to line up with the 4 cm drain, the drain is fitted, and the bowl is set in silicone. With the rim 5 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over it: a tall vessel faucet on the deck or a wall-mounted spout. Because one of the eight faces will sit toward the faucet, decide the orientation of the bowl at the same time as the faucet position.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. The octagon can also be carved in a custom size or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the counter.

Care

Black marble is a porous calcite stone, so vinegar, lemon and harsh chemicals can etch or dull the polished surface. Sealing is the foundation of its protection against stains, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the sink is used.
