Tundra Gray marble, hand carved

This freestanding bathtub is hand carved from one continuous block of Tundra Gray marble, quarried in Turkey. It is not assembled from panels or layered over a shell: the basin, the rim and the outer walls are all the same piece of stone. The walls are 2 to 3 cm thick, which gives the tub its weight and its stability over years of daily use. At 67 inches long, 29.5 inches wide and 19.5 inches high, it is a full length soaking tub that still fits most primary bathrooms without crowding them.

Design

Cool gray with moving veins

Tundra Gray is a cool, mid gray marble. Lighter and darker veins cross the surface in loose, natural lines, and no two sections of a block look the same, so every tub has its own pattern. The tone works with white walls and pale floors as easily as with darker tile, which makes the tub a natural fit for both modern and more traditional bathrooms. The surface is honed to a matte finish. It keeps reflections low and lets the gray read as soft rather than cold, and the grain of the stone stays visible across the whole piece. Moderate variation in tone and veining from one tub to the next is normal for this stone, and it is part of buying a piece carved from a natural block rather than cast in a mold.

Where to use it

Room for a full soak

The 67 inch length allows a full body soak, and the 29.5 inch width leaves space to move without taking over the room. As a freestanding piece it can stand in the middle of a bathroom, under a window or with its long side to a wall, as long as there is floor around it for cleaning and for the plumbing below. Marble holds heat well. Once the stone has warmed from the bath water it gives that warmth back, so a long soak stays comfortable longer before the water needs topping up. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain fittings.

Installation

Floor, drain and filler first

Because of its weight and size, the tub ships in a protective wooden crate. Before delivery the floor needs a structural check: It must carry the marble tub when it is full of water and in use, and on a framed floor the joists may need reinforcing. The plumber sets the drain under the 4 cm opening and plans the water supply for a floor mounted tub filler or a wall mounted faucet. With the drain and supply in place, the tub is set, leveled and connected. Professional installation is strongly recommended, both to handle the weight safely and to line up the drain exactly.

Care

Tundra Gray is a calcite marble with a honed surface. Like all marble it is a porous stone: acidic products such as vinegar or lemon can etch it, and abrasive scrubbing can scratch the finish. Periodic resealing helps protect the stone against mineral staining, and how often that is needed depends on how much the tub is used.
