Every marble sink is one of a kind, and this rectangular Calacatta sink is no exception. It is carved by hand from white Calacatta marble quarried in Turkey, and it arrives with its own gray striations, set by the block it was cut from. The sink measures 18 inches long, 12 inches wide and 6 inches high, a compact rectangle that sits on top of the counter in a bathroom or a kitchen. The walls are 2 to 3 cm thick, solid stone from rim to base. The result is a basin that holds water and also reads as a carved object on the counter, which is why people choose a stone sink in the first place.
Design
Gray veins under a polished face
Calacatta is known for a bright white background crossed by bold gray veining, and that contrast is the main character of this sink. Some pieces carry wide, sweeping veins; others show finer, broken lines. The polished finish, applied inside and out, brings up the depth and luster of the marble and makes the white look brighter and the gray lines sharper. Because each sink is shaped by a craftsman rather than pressed from a mold, there is slight variation in wall thickness and in the line of each edge. Those small differences are part of a handmade piece. The edges are curved, so water runs off rather than pooling at the rim, and there are no tight corners for debris to settle in. Subtle shifts in color and in the intensity of the veining across the surface are not defects: they come from the way the stone formed, and moderate variation between pieces is normal for this marble. No two sinks will look the same.

Installation
Set it on a strong counter
This is an above-counter sink, and solid marble is heavy, so the counter and the vanity or cabinet below it must be solid, flat and level. A hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the sink is bedded in silicone. Because the basin stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over the rim: a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted faucet both work. Choose the faucet before the counter is cut so the drain and the spout line up. Professional installation by an experienced stone installer is recommended, which avoids the cracks or leaks that a poor installation can cause.

Care
Calacatta is a calcite marble, so it is porous: acids can etch the polished surface and dark liquids can stain the white stone if left to sit. Sealing helps keep liquids out, and how often the sink is resealed depends on how much it is used.
