A marble fireplace surround is the stone frame around a fireplace opening: two side legs, a header across the top and, in most designs, a mantel shelf above. A hand-carved surround is cut from solid marble or travertine, so the carving, the veining and the edges are all in the stone itself. A marble fireplace with a carved surround is also what many listings call a stone mantel. The twelve marble fireplace surround ideas below are in marble, travertine and onyx: nine hand-carved pieces, an Art Deco mantel, a fluted mantel and a plain modern mantel, grouped by style from French villa and Art Deco to fluted and modern. Sizes in the table are width, height and depth in inches.
All twelve are in our stone fireplaces collection, the nine marble pieces are also in marble fireplace surrounds, and each lists its finish and dimensions on its product page.

The terms overlap. A surround is the frame on the sides and top of the fireplace opening. A mantel, strictly, is the shelf above the opening, but in everyday use "mantel" and "mantelpiece" often mean the whole stone frame, shelf included, which is how several of the pieces below are named. A hearth is the stone floor area in front of the opening, a separate piece. The overall dimensions in a listing describe the outside of the frame, and the opening size appears on the product page or its drawing. "Stone mantel" is used for both carved stone frames and simple stone shelves.
"French villa" is the maker's style name for ornate classical carving: moldings, scrolls and sculpted motifs in the manner of European country houses.

Crema Marfil is a beige marble with soft cream tones, here carved in a French villa style with sculpted motifs on the frame. It is listed at 48 inches wide, 39.5 inches tall and 12 inches deep, polished. The carving gives a traditional living room or library a centerpiece in warm stone, and the beige suits cream walls and wood paneling.
Honey onyx is a banded, translucent stone in amber and beige. This surround carves it in the same French villa style, 57 by 52 inches with a 6 inch depth listed, in a honed finish. Onyx is a banded stone prized for its color, and in a fireplace wall it makes the surround the warmest object in the room.

White Carrara with fine gray veining, carved and polished, listed at 67 inches wide, 69 inches tall and 14 inches deep. It pairs with painted paneling and a white or gray room.

A slim frame in Calacatta Viola, with fine vertical flutes running down the legs and across the header, polished, listed at 36 inches wide, 40 inches tall and 2.5 inches deep. The dark plum veining crosses the flutes, so the stone pattern and the ribs read at the same time. At this size it suits a bedroom or a small sitting room, and against cream paneling, as in the photo, it is the one strong pattern on the wall.

A hand-carved Toros Black marble mantel with white veining, polished, listed at 49 inches wide by 69 inches tall. Black marble gives the strongest contrast of the twelve, and against a white wall it reads as a formal, graphic piece. It suits a room with black window frames or iron details.
Calacatta Viola is a white marble with gray and plum veining, carved and polished, listed at 61 inches wide, 52 inches tall and 16.5 inches deep. The purple veining sits well in a room with deep green, plum or gray walls.
Art Deco fireplaces of the 1920s and 1930s tended to favor stepped, geometric outlines over carved ornament, and both pieces here follow that idea.
Afyon White marble in a linear Art Deco profile, polished, listed at 60 inches wide, 47 inches tall and 8 inches deep, so it is shallow and wide. White suits a black and white or brass-accented room.

A larger beige marble piece with stepped geometric detailing, polished, listed at 70 by 74 inches. Beige suits a room of warm neutrals.
Fluting cuts vertical channels into the stone, which catch light and shadow in parallel lines. This polished Carrara mantel is 70 inches wide, 52 1/8 inches tall and 7 inches deep, with a 42 by 37 1/8 inch opening shown on its product drawing. Fluting adds texture to a white marble fireplace without carving.

A plain, modern frame in Calacatta Viola, 69 inches wide, 50 inches tall and 6 inches deep, polished. With no carving, the purple and gray veining is the only decoration. A modern surround like this suits a linear or minimalist firebox and a room with few other patterns.

Travertine is a stone formed around mineral springs, and both surrounds here are a warm light beige, honed and filled, so the surface is matte. The traditional version, listed at 52 inches wide, 44 inches tall and 12 inches deep, has carved classical detailing. The modern version, listed at 52 inches wide, 48 inches tall and 10 inches deep, is a 5-piece modular surround with plain, squared lines. Travertine has a matte, warm beige look that fits Mediterranean, farmhouse and transitional rooms.
Two looks, shown as styling pairings only; fit between a surround and a firebox depends on their listed dimensions.

Warm modern: the modular travertine surround around a 36 inch electric fireplace insert, with a hand-hewn poplar shelf above. Matte travertine and rough wood give a modern shape a warm finish.
For a full wall of stone instead of a framed opening, see our stacked stone fireplace ideas with ledger panels, and for tile around the opening, our older roundup of fireplace tile designs has fourteen more. Stone mantels and wood mantel shelves are in our mantels collection, and fireboxes are in fireplace inserts and electric fireplaces.
Listings give the outside of the frame: width across the top, height from the floor to the top of the shelf, and depth from the wall to the front of the shelf. The opening, the space inside the frame, is a separate number. The Carrara fluted mantel in this guide, for example, is 70 inches wide, 52 1/8 inches tall and 7 inches deep, with a 42 by 37 1/8 inch opening on its drawing.
Travertine forms with small natural holes. "Filled" means those holes have been packed level, and "honed" means the face has been ground to a smooth, matte finish without polishing. A honed and filled travertine surround looks soft and even, where polished marble is reflective. Both travertine surrounds in this guide have this finish.
A fluted mantel has vertical channels cut into its legs or face, a detail taken from classical columns. The channels catch light and shadow in parallel lines, adding texture without figurative carving. Fluted designs appear in both classic and contemporary interiors; the Carrara mantel in this guide is fluted.
Neither is better in general; the choice is about the look. Polished marble has a reflective surface and pronounced veining, in white, black, beige and purple-veined stones. Honed and filled travertine is matte and warm beige, with a softer surface. Both are natural stone, and both are offered here in hand-carved surrounds.
A modular surround is supplied in several separate pieces, such as two legs, a header and a shelf, that together form the frame. The light travertine modern surround in this guide comes in five pieces, with plain, squared lines.
