Travertine · Above-Counter sink

Beige travertine, a hand-carved round sink

This round sink is carved by hand from beige travertine quarried in Turkey, a stone valued for centuries for its warmth, its durability and its character. It measures 16 inches in diameter and 6 inches high, and it can sit on top of the counter or drop into it. Each piece is chiseled individually, so the color and veining vary from sink to sink, and that variation is a mark of real stone rather than a flaw. Over the years travertine develops a patina that deepens its character instead of showing wear.

Design

Honed and filled for daily use

Raw travertine is full of small natural pits and voids, which collect soap residue and make the stone harder to look after. This sink arrives honed and filled: the pits are closed and the surface is honed to a smooth matte finish, so it keeps the look of natural stone while being far easier to live with. The matte face does not broadcast water spots, fingerprints or dust the way a glossy surface does, and it gives better grip when wet. The bowl has no overflow, so there are no concealed channels inside the stone where water can sit unseen. Moderate color variation between sinks is normal for this travertine.

Where to use it

Bathroom or kitchen, two ways to fit

The sink is listed for bathroom and kitchen use. At 16 inches across and 6 inches high, it sits comfortably on a standard bathroom vanity without overwhelming it, and in a kitchen it suits a bar or prep area. It can be installed above the counter, as a vessel, or as a drop-in, with the rim resting on the countertop around a cutout. The 4 cm drain hole accepts standard drain connections.

Installation

Above the counter or dropped in

Solid travertine is heavy, so the counter or cabinet must be flat, level and strong enough to carry it. Above the counter, only a drain hole is needed: It is cut to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in silicone. As a drop-in, the countertop is cut to fit the sink so the rim rests on the counter, and the joint is sealed with silicone. Either way, the faucet should be chosen with the height of the rim in mind: a tall deck faucet or a wall-mounted spout for a vessel, a standard deck faucet set behind the sink for a drop-in. A professional installer is recommended.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on one of two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. Both are the same 16 by 6 inch honed and filled bowl. It can also be carved in a custom size or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the counter or cabinet.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, and even with the pits filled, acids can etch its honed surface. Sealing helps keep moisture and stains out, and how often it is resealed depends on use, commonly every nine to twelve months.
