Black basalt square shower base
This square shower base is hand carved from solid black basalt, a dense volcanic stone quarried in Turkey. It measures 36 by 36 inches and stands 3 inches high, with stone 2 to 3 cm thick, all in one piece. Basalt is a durable natural stone for a shower floor, and the honed finish brings out its deep black color without glare. This is a base made for decades of daily use, and one that keeps its looks as it ages.
Design
Deep black, honed smooth
Basalt can be finished in several ways, and this base is honed. The honed surface deepens the black of the stone, keeps reflections low and is forgiving in daily use, since it hides fingerprints, water spots and small surface marks better than a gloss would. The dark color also hides minor soiling between cleanings. Because each base is carved by hand from natural stone, every piece has slight variations in color and finish, and moderate variation between bases is normal. These come from the mineral makeup of each block and give the shower its own character.

A low glare finish that deepens the black and hides water spots.

No seams, no corners for grime to collect and no laminated layers.
Where to use it
A square base for compact showers
The 36 inch square fits a standard corner or alcove shower, a guest bath or a compact primary shower. At 3 inches high, it gives a clear step into the shower. The base is one solid piece of basalt from surface to underside, with an 8.5 cm center drain opening for a standard drain, which is not included. Black stone pairs naturally with white, gray or concrete toned walls and with matte black or satin fittings, and it gives a modern shower a strong, grounded floor.

Installation
Set level on a mortar bed
The base is set by a professional on a level mortar bed over a proper shower membrane. Before setting, the plumbing rough in places the drain beneath the 8.5 cm center opening. The walls and enclosure are then finished around the base, and the joints between stone and walls are sealed. The base arrives packed in a wooden crate to protect it in transit.

Care
Basalt is a dense volcanic stone with a honed surface. Like all natural stone it has some porosity, so sealing is recommended. Acidic, bleach based and abrasive products can dull the honed finish.
