Brown onyx that lets the light through
This round vessel sink is carved by hand from brown onyx quarried in Turkey. Onyx is a translucent stone: where light passes through the thinner parts of the bowl, its brown and beige bands turn a warm honey colour and seem to glow from inside. The sink measures 16 inches in diameter and 4 inches high and sits on top of the counter. Each bowl is shaped individually from its own block, with its own veining and natural colour variation, so no two are identical.

Design
A shallow, polished honey bowl
The bowl is polished, and the glossy surface deepens the brown and beige banding while letting light move into the stone. The character of the sink changes through the day: in daylight it reads as warm brown stone with fine veining, and when it is backlit or lit from below with ambient lighting it takes on a soft amber glow. The walls are carved 2 to 3 cm thick, thin enough to show the translucency and thick enough for a solid rim. The edges are curved and polished, with no hard angles where debris can gather. At 4 inches high, the profile is low and balanced while still giving a practical basin for everyday washing. Moderate color variation is normal for onyx.

Where to use it
Warm stone for many styles
The brown and beige tones work in modern, transitional and traditional bathrooms. They suit walnut and oak, bronze and brass fittings, and warm plaster walls, and they soften a bathroom built around cool white tile. A vessel bowl sits on the counter rather than cutting into it, which keeps plumbing under the counter simple and leaves the cabinet free for storage. The sink works on a modern vanity or in a recessed niche. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain fittings.

Installation
Plan the light with the counter
As an above-countertop sink, the bowl needs a counter that is flat, level and strong enough for solid stone. A hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in silicone. With the rim 4 inches above the counter, a tall vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout reaches over it comfortably. If the translucency is to be shown off, plan any backlighting or under-counter lighting at the same time as the plumbing and the faucet.

Care
Onyx is a porous calcite stone and softer than many, so acids such as vinegar can etch the polished surface and water left to dry can mark it. Sealing helps protect it, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the sink is used.
