The finish is honed: a matte, smooth surface that shows the true color and character of the marble without the mirror shine of a glossy stone. Honed marble feels slightly velvety to the hand and is less slippery when wet, which matters on a surface people lean on every morning and evening. Calacatta Olivia reads as a calm white stone from across the room, and the gray veining only becomes clear up close, where it moves in long, loose lines rather than tight clusters. Every block is different, so the width of the veins, their direction and the amount of gray will vary from one sink to the next. Moderate color variation is normal for this marble and is part of what makes each piece its own. The basin is shaped with curved inside edges instead of hard angles, so there are no tight corners where soap and water collect. Along the back, the integrated backsplash rises from the same stone as the basin. There is no separate strip to grout or caulk to the top, and the veining continues from the counter surface up into the splash.
