Calacatta Viola marble, a long rectangular basin

This rectangular bathroom sink is carved by hand from Calacatta Viola marble quarried and finished in Turkey. The stone has a white base crossed by gray veining, and because every block is different, no two sinks share the same pattern. It measures 32 inches long, 16 inches wide and 9 inches high, a generous size that gives room to wash without splashing the wall or the floor. The sink is designed to hang on the wall, and it can also sit on a countertop. Side faucet holes are part of the design, so the faucet stands beside the basin rather than behind it. The whole piece is solid marble, polished to a gloss inside and out.

Design

Clean lines, a softly curved basin

From the outside the sink reads as a simple rectangle with crisp architectural lines. Inside, the basin is softly curved, which makes it comfortable to use and leaves no tight corners for soap or toothpaste to settle in. Calacatta Viola is chosen for its bold, dramatic movement: the veins run in broad sweeps rather than a fine, even grain, and they change from one end of the 32 inch length to the other. Installation

Plan the wall and the faucet first

Solid marble at this size is heavy, so the wall behind a wall-hung sink needs solid backing. Blocking between the studs at the mounting height is the usual approach, and it is easiest to add while the wall is still open. The brackets are then fixed into that blocking, not into drywall alone. If the sink will sit on a countertop instead, the top must be flat, level and strong enough to carry the stone, and the sink is set in silicone over a drain hole cut to line up with its own. In both cases, decide on the faucet early: the side faucet holes, a wall-mounted spout or a counter faucet each need the supply lines in a different place. Because of the weight and the plumbing, a professional installer is recommended.

Calacatta Viola is a calcite marble with a polished surface, and like all marble it is a porous stone: acidic liquids can etch it and strong pigments can stain it if left to sit. The sink arrives sealed, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the bathroom is used.

It hangs on brackets fixed into blocking between the wall studs, because solid marble is heavy. It can also sit on a flat, level countertop set in silicone. A professional installer is recommended.
