Calacatta Viola Marble Vessel Sink Handcrafted Leaf Design Bathroom Vanity, angled view

Marble · Above-Counter sink

Calacatta Viola carved into a leaf

This vessel sink is hand carved from a solid block of Calacatta Viola marble quarried in Turkey, and shaped as a leaf. Its outline is organic rather than round or oval, which is why it reads as a sculpture on the vanity as much as a basin. It measures 20 inches wide, 24 inches long and 5 inches high, sizes that give a generous wash area without the bulk that would overwhelm a standard vanity. The finish is honed, a soft matte surface, and the sink sits above the counter, where the full leaf form can be seen. Where a white Carrara stone reads cool and quiet, Calacatta Viola brings color into the room through its veining, which is what makes it a choice for a bathroom meant to feel warm and personal.

Design

A leaf form in honed marble

Calacatta Viola is admired for its creamy white background streaked with deep wine and plum-colored veining, with gray running through it as well. Each block is different, so the color and pattern of this sink are its own, and no two bathrooms will have the same piece. The leaf shape follows a soft, asymmetric line, with curved edges and smooth transitions that make daily cleaning simpler than an angular design with tight corners. The sink is carved from one block, with no assembly and no seams. Vessel sinks have moved well beyond the standard round and oval forms, toward irregular and artistic shapes that let a bathroom say something about the people who use it, and this leaf design belongs to that direction. The veining runs across the curve of the leaf differently on every piece, so the way the purple meets the white is never repeated. Up close, the honed surface has a soft, almost velvety feel under the hand, and the veining shows as depth within the stone rather than as a pattern on top of it.

Where to use it

Why a honed finish here

Honed marble is ground smooth but left without a high gloss, so it has a matte appearance rather than a mirror shine. On a bathroom sink, that matters more than looks alone. A matte surface hides small scratches and etch marks better than a glossy one, and a bathroom basin sees heavy daily use. The honed face also shows the depth of the veining in a quieter way, so the purple and gray read as part of the stone rather than as a reflection. That makes honed the practical choice for people who want marble without having to keep it pristine. At 20 by 24 inches, the basin holds a generous volume of water, and the 5 inch height keeps the profile low on the counter. A 1.5 inch drain opening takes standard drain fittings. Placed above the counter, the sink becomes the focal point of the vanity, and it pairs well with simple fittings that leave the leaf form to do the talking.

Installation

Set it on a flat counter

The sink sits on top of the counter. Solid marble is heavy, and its weight and density keep the sink from shifting over years of use, but the counter must be flat, level and strong enough to carry it. A drain hole is cut through the counter to line up with the drain, and the sink is set in silicone. Because the leaf shape is irregular, it is worth placing the sink on the counter before cutting, to find the position that looks right and leaves room on both sides. The rim stands 5 inches above the counter, so the faucet must reach over it: a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout. A wall-mounted faucet keeps the counter clear around the leaf outline. Choose the faucet before the counter is cut, so the drain, the faucet and the supply lines are planned together.

Why we chose it

  • One block, no seamsThe leaf is carved from a single block of Calacatta Viola, with no assembly and nothing to come apart. Dense marble handles daily water, temperature changes and common bathroom spills without cracking or warping.
  • A patina, not wearOver time, marble picks up small marks and a patina. A well-kept marble sink after twenty years often looks better than a new one, and the marks add warmth to a cool stone.
  • Made to orderEach sink is made to order, with custom sizes, shapes and finishes on request.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on two schedules: the 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. Both are the same 20 by 24 inch leaf in a honed finish. Custom sizes, shapes and finishes are also made to order, whether a vanity calls for a different depth, the design calls for another shape, or the plumbing needs a different layout. Rather than forcing the room to fit a ready-made sink, the sink can be made to fit the room. The same leaf can also be made larger for a wide vanity or smaller for a powder room. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the vanity.

Care

Calacatta Viola is a calcite marble, and like all marble it is porous, so acidic liquids such as citrus or vinegar can etch the honed surface. Sealing keeps liquid and stains from working into the pores of the stone, and how often the sink is resealed depends on how much the bathroom is used.
