Carrara White on a fluted column
This freestanding pedestal sink is carved by hand from Carrara White marble quarried in Turkey. A round basin sits on top of a fluted column, and the whole piece stands 33 inches high with an 18 by 18 inch footprint. Those proportions let it work in a small powder room as easily as in a larger primary bath, where it reads as a piece of carved stone rather than a fixture. The marble has a white background with soft gray veining and occasional purple tones, and because every block is different, no two sinks share the same veining, depth of color or surface character.

Design
A fluted column, a polished bowl
The column is the defining detail. Vertical flutes run up its length, giving the sink a strong upright line and catching light and shadow as the day changes. Above it, the round basin has a substantial rim that shows the thickness of the stone. Each sink is carved individually by hand rather than cast in a mold, so the wall thickness, the depth of the flutes and the finish of the surface carry small differences from piece to piece. The interior and exterior are polished, which brings out the brightness of the white marble and the line of the gray veins, and gives the stone a glow in natural light. A glossy surface also sheds soap residue more easily than a rough one. The veining is natural, so its pattern and tone vary between sinks, and moderate color variation between pieces is normal for this marble.

A level floor and planned plumbing
As a stand-alone sink, the full weight of the marble rests on the floor. Solid stone at this height is heavy, so the floor must be level and strong enough to carry it, and a tile or stone floor over a sound subfloor is the right base. The drain and supply lines come either from the wall behind the sink or up through the floor, and their position should be decided before the sink arrives, since the column leaves little room to adjust pipes once it is set. The faucet is usually wall-mounted above the basin, so its height and reach need to be planned with the 33 inch sink height in mind. A professional installer is recommended, both for moving the stone safely and for lining up the plumbing.

Care
Carrara White is a calcite marble with a polished surface, softer and more porous than many other stones. Acids such as vinegar or lemon juice can etch the polish, and dark liquids can stain the light stone if they sit. Sealing fills the stone's pores, and how often it is resealed depends on use.
