Travertine · Above-Counter sink

Beige travertine, cut as an octagon

This vessel sink is carved from a solid block of beige travertine quarried in Turkey and shaped by hand into an eight-sided bowl. The light beige stone carries subtle veining, and it reads as warm and organic rather than cold. Because every sink is cut from its own block, the pattern, the tone and the small marks of the stone are never repeated from one piece to the next. The bowl measures 16 inches across and 5 inches high, with walls 2 to 3 cm thick, and the whole piece is solid stone from rim to base. It sits on top of the counter, so it suits a bathroom vanity or a kitchen prep counter, and it gives a plain vanity a clear focal point without taking over the room.

Design

Eight sides around a curved basin

The octagon is the reason to choose this sink. From the outside it shows eight flat faces meeting at soft angles, a geometric outline that looks crisp next to a straight-edged vanity and still feels calm in a bathroom built around natural materials. Inside, the basin is curved rather than faceted. The angled walls lead water down toward the drain, and the rounded interior leaves no tight corners where soap and toothpaste can settle, so the bowl is easier to keep clean than its sharp outline suggests. The shape also makes good use of the 16 inch footprint: the basin keeps a generous working area for hand washing while the outside stays compact on the counter. The finish is polished, inside and out. Polishing brings up the warmth of the beige and the fine veining, and the smooth surface holds less dirt than a rougher face, so daily buildup is easier to keep under control. Travertine is a natural calcite stone, and moderate color variation between sinks is normal, so expect differences in shade, veining and small surface marks from one bowl to another. Over the years the stone develops a patina that reads as character rather than wear.

Where to use it

Where the octagon fits

The warm beige works with modern, contemporary, transitional and traditional bathrooms, and it pairs with both cool and warm palettes: white oak, walnut, painted cabinets, plaster walls, brass or black fittings. In a powder room it becomes the piece guests notice first. In a primary bath or a busy family bathroom it is solid enough for daily use, morning and night. The facts list it for bathroom and kitchen use, so it can also serve as a bar or prep sink on a kitchen counter, where the polished stone sits well next to wood and natural stone tops. At 16 inches across and 5 inches high, the bowl leaves room on most vanities for a soap dish or a tray beside it. Because it sits above the counter, there is no undermount cutout to plan, and the flat top of the rim leaves the faucet position open: a tall vessel faucet on the deck, or a spout coming out of the wall.

Installation

A flat counter and a tall faucet

This is an above-counter sink. Solid travertine is heavy, so the counter it sits on must be flat, level and strong enough to carry the stone. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain in the bowl, and the sink is set in a bead of silicone so it stays in place and the joint stays sealed. There is no complex undermount plumbing and no cabinet modification beyond the drain opening. Because the rim stands 5 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over it. A tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout both work, and the choice is best made before the counter is cut, so the faucet hole or the wall supply lines can be placed to match. The solid construction gives the bowl a stable footing once it is set, which matters in a family bathroom where it will be used several times a day.

Why we chose it

  • One block of stoneThe octagonal bowl is carved from a single piece of beige travertine, with no joints to open up over time.
  • Geometry that worksEight outer faces for a crisp outline, a curved inner basin for easy cleaning.
  • Made to orderEach sink is made to order, with custom sizes and finishes available on request.

Made to order

Made to order

Every sink is made to order, and this one comes on two production schedules for the same 16 inch polished bowl. The 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice. If the standard size does not suit the vanity, the octagon can also be made in a custom size or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the counter and the finish in mind.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone, so acidic liquids such as citrus juice or vinegar can etch the polished surface, and sealing helps keep moisture and stains from cosmetics or toothpaste out of the stone. How often it is resealed depends on use, typically once every year or two.
