Handcrafted Carrara White Marble Vessel Sink Polished Natural Stone

Marble · Above-Counter sink
This vessel sink is carved by hand from a solid block of Carrara White marble quarried in Turkey. Its shape is free-form rather than a strict circle or rectangle, so the bowl reads as a piece of carved stone sitting on the counter, with a flowing outline that looks different from every side. The stone has a soft white base crossed by subtle gray veins, and because the pattern comes from the block itself, no two sinks are ever identical. The bowl measures 24.5 inches wide, 18 inches long and 6 inches high, which gives a generous washing area on a primary bath vanity while still sitting comfortably on a wide powder room counter. Every sink is made in a stone workshop in Turkey, where the carvers shape the outside and the basin separately and finish each surface by hand. The result is a fixture that is used every morning and also stands on the counter as a solid object in its own right.

Design
The inside of the bowl is polished. Polishing closes the surface of the marble and gives it a glossy, reflective face, which brings the gray veining forward and makes the white look brighter under bathroom lighting. A polished surface also helps the stone resist staining better than a more open, matte face would. The outside is shaped with a more natural, carved character, so the bowl has two textures: smooth where water runs, and more organic where it is seen from the room. Carrara White is known for softer, more linear veins than bolder white marbles, which gives the sink a quiet, classic look rather than a dramatic one. The edges are curved and the walls are solid stone, 2 to 3 cm thick. Moderate variation in tone and vein pattern between sinks is normal for this stone, so the sink that arrives will have its own version of the white and gray.
A glossy basin that shows the gray veining clearly and helps keep stains from settling into the stone.
A hand-carved, irregular bowl shape, so each sink has its own profile on the counter.

Where to use it
As an above-counter sink, the bowl sits on top of the vanity rather than below it. That raised position keeps the cabinet underneath fully usable for storage, since there is no basin hanging down into it, and it means the counter needs only a single drain hole rather than a large cutout. The white and gray marble works with warm wood vanities, with painted cabinets, and with open shelving in natural materials, where the carved outside sits well beside other organic surfaces. In a bathroom with darker tile or stone, the white bowl becomes the brightest point on the wall. The 4 cm drain opening takes standard drain connections. Because of its 24.5 inch width, the sink is best planned on a vanity with some counter left on each side, so the bowl does not crowd the edge and there is room for soap and a towel next to it.

Installation
Solid marble is heavy, so the counter it sits on must be flat, level and strong enough to carry the stone without flexing. A single drain hole is cut through the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain in the bowl, and the sink is set in a bead of silicone around its base. Because the rim stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over it: either a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout. A spout that ends roughly 1 to 3 inches above the rim gives a controlled stream and a comfortable reach for washing, with less splash on the counter. The faucet should be chosen before the counter is drilled, so the faucet hole and the drain hole are placed together, and so a wall-mounted spout can have its supply lines run while the wall is open.

Why we chose it

Made to order
This sink is made to order on two production schedules. The 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice for a project with more time in the plan. The 24.5 by 18 by 6 inch bowl is the standard configuration, but the workshop can also carve this sink in a custom size, shape or finish to fit a particular vanity. To start a custom order, contact us with the dimensions of the counter and the look in mind.
Carrara White is a calcite marble, and like all marble it is a porous stone: acidic liquids such as wine or lemon juice can etch the polished surface, and strong pigments can stain it if left to sit. Sealing keeps moisture and stains out of the stone, and how often it is resealed depends on how much the bathroom is used, often around once a year.
