Travertine · Vessel sink

A conical travertine vessel bowl

This vessel sink is carved by hand from solid beige travertine quarried in Turkey, in a classic conical shape that narrows from a wide rim to a smaller base. It sits on top of the counter rather than below it, so the whole carved form is on view and the vanity becomes the focal point of the room. The bowl measures 16 inches in diameter and 6 inches high. Because it is cut from natural stone and finished by hand, each sink shows its own color variation and veining, and no two are alike.

Design

A cone with no corners

The conical shape is a practical one. The interior and exterior are rounded all the way through, which leaves no corners where debris collects, no tight crevices to trap grime and no flat ledges where water sits. The surface is honed and filled. Honing gives the stone a soft matte face that looks muted when dry and brightens when water runs across it, and filling closes the natural pits of the travertine. Over the years the honed surface develops a gentle patina rather than showing wear. The golden beige color sits easily in modern minimal bathrooms, transitional rooms, Mediterranean schemes and traditional spaces, next to stone counters, wood vanities, dark fixtures or contemporary hardware. Moderate color variation is normal for this stone, so the tone and veining will differ from bowl to bowl.

Where to use it

More storage under the counter

A vessel sink does not reach down into the cabinet, which leaves more usable storage inside the vanity. In a compact bathroom where every inch matters, that space is valuable. The 16 inch diameter suits a powder room or a guest bath, and it works in a primary bath as well. Standing 6 inches above the counter puts the basin at a comfortable working height. The bowl has no overflow, and the 4 cm drain hole is sized for standard drain assemblies. Most standard bathroom vanities can take this sink without replacing the counter.

Size

16" diameter × 6" H, solid beige travertine.

Drain

4 cm drain hole, no overflow.

Installation

One hole and a tall faucet

Installation is straightforward: the counter needs only one hole for the drain pipe, lined up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in silicone. The counter must be flat, level and strong, because solid travertine is heavy. With the rim 6 inches above the counter, the faucet has to reach over it, so plan for a tall vessel faucet on the deck or a wall-mounted spout. Because the bowl has no overflow, the drain should be a vessel drain without an overflow port. Choose the faucet before the counter is drilled.

Why we chose it

  • Hand carvedEach conical bowl is carved from Turkish travertine and finished by hand, with its own veining.
  • Lasts for decadesTravertine handles daily use and temperature changes, and it gains a patina with age.
  • Made to orderEach sink is made to order, with custom sizes and finishes on request.

Made to order

Made to order

This sink is made to order on two schedules. The 3 to 4 week option ships sooner, while the 8 to 14 week option is the lower-priced choice for the same 16 by 6 inch conical bowl. It can also be carved in a custom size or finish. To start a custom order, contact us with the measurements of the counter.

Care

Travertine is a porous calcite stone. Acids can etch the honed surface, and abrasive pads can scratch it. To keep moisture and stains out, the stone is resealed, once or twice a year depending on use.
