A tapered bowl in light travertine
This vessel sink is carved from a single solid piece of light beige travertine quarried in Turkey. No molds and no casting are involved: Each bowl is shaped and finished by hand, so the veining, the subtle shifts of color and the texture of the stone are different in every piece. It measures 16 inches in diameter and 6 inches high, and its sides taper gently from the rim toward the base, which gives the bowl a lighter look on the counter than a straight-sided basin. Travertine has a long history as a building stone, the Romans built the Colosseum largely from it, and it is still a favorite in spa and bathroom design for the warm, light beige tones that this sink carries.
Design
Honed, filled and tapered
The finish is honed and filled. Honing gives the stone a smooth, matte face that sits comfortably in modern, minimal and traditional bathrooms, and it shows fingerprints and water spots less than a high gloss would. Filling is done during fabrication: the natural pits that are characteristic of travertine are filled, so the surface is closed and even rather than open and porous to the eye. That addresses the most common concern about travertine sinks, the small holes where water and soap can sit, and it keeps the stone far easier to look after than unfilled travertine. The interior and exterior surfaces are both finished and sealed. The tapered edges of the bowl are smooth and refined, and the light beige color shows moderate natural variation from one sink to the next.

Where to use it
A practical 16 inch bowl
The 16 inch diameter and 6 inch height make a well balanced basin: deep enough to be useful without excessive splashing, and tall enough to work with most vessel faucets. A spout height of 9 inches or more above the counter is comfortable with a bowl of this size. The 4 cm drain hole accepts standard drain assemblies. Whether the project is a powder room update or a new primary bath, the size suits a single vanity without crowding the counter, and the warm, light tone pairs with wood, stone and painted cabinetry. The tapered form leaves a little more visible counter around the base of the bowl, which keeps a small vanity looking open.

Installation
Set it on a level counter
The counter under a stone vessel sink must be flat, level and strong, since solid travertine is heavy. A drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in silicone, which holds it and seals the joint. Because the bowl rises 6 inches above the counter, the faucet must reach over the rim: a tall deck-mounted vessel faucet or a wall-mounted spout. Choose the faucet before the counter is drilled so its position and reach suit the bowl.

Care
Travertine is a porous calcite stone and is naturally sensitive to acids such as lemon or vinegar, which can etch the honed surface. This sink arrives filled and sealed, and how often it is resealed depends on water hardness and use.
